Sept Harvest Challenge 2016- Mullein Flowers

I have dried a good amount of Mullein Leaves for future use, I have some lovely first year leaves from mullein to make leaf Mullein Oil for Pain use..

P1080304

BUT for today, we were picking the flowers buds, like so many things this year, I went at my regular time and was caught at just how further ahead these plants were compared to a normal year, I will head back in the two, three and four weeks till the seed has turned to do a good seed collection.

P1080302

I put the mullein flowers and flower buds onto a lovely mid size mullein leaf..  I took the flowers and spread them in a single layer and I will let them wilt out for 12 hours and then I will put them in a clean dry jar and cover with good olive oil and allow them to cold process for one month flipping it and giving a shake once a week in a cool dark area and then strain and bottle for keeping use.

The flowers are about the size of a small piece of a corn and they tend to bloom in sets, in this case, you can see the first blooming flower has become a seed and the tiny bloom is between it in this photo.. Above you can see one that has a flower on both sides.

P1080303

When using for a sore ear, I will make sure its gently warmed to body temp and put 3 drops per ear and then gentle clear with a cotton pad or ball after 3 min. If I am using it for pain relief  I will rub it into sore muscles as a oil.

If you have a itch scalp, I might consider mixing some mullein leaf oil onto my scalp and let sit for 10 min before washing it out..

I was able to get enough to make a pint of this aweseome Flower Mullein Oil, which will used for ear infections, to be honest because Hubby and I rarely have them, most of the time they are used for ear infection in regards to the purrpots more then anything else but its always better to be safe then sorry and keep my herbal cupboard up to date. Never know when a friend might have a headache or a little one visiting might need a bit of help after a windy day with a sore ear 🙂

Mullein essential oil contains about a hundred major volatile organic compounds which have been detected. This incredible range of chemical compounds lend it its powerful healing properties. These are the nutrition facts of mullein essential oil.

Chemical composition of mullein essential oil

The major chemical compounds found in essential oil of Verbascum thapsus ( also called Verbascum oil ) are these :

  • Coumarin – It has many powerful properties, like anti-HIV, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-osteoporosis and many other effects. It is also used to relieve arrhythmia, asthma, pain and swelling.
  • Rotenone – It is a prominent insecticide. It kills scabies and lice.
  • Tannins – These are a class of compounds which show activity against certain kinds of viruses and other pathogens. They are being studied as a cure for viral infections like herpes.
  • Saponins – This class of compounds are beneficial in lowering cholesterol. They are believed to possess activities like anti-HIV, anti-hepatotoxicity and anti-virus. They are also powerful antioxidants. Mullein essential oil contains a special saponin called verbascosaponin.
  • Aucubin – This compound protects the liver from damage. It has been found to aid the liver in recovering from damage caused by carbon tetrachloride. It also helps in healing oral wounds, like mouth ulcers and canker sores.
  • Catalpol – This compound is believed to stimulate hormone production in the adrenal cortex, although this has not been proved.
  • Flavonoids – These are a class of compounds that exert powerful health benefits in small amounts. They are also powerful antioxidants.
  • Verbascoside – This compound is an antibacterial. It kills Staphylococccus aureus. This bacteria is known to be the cause behind cellulitis, boils and even acne

Sept-Harvest Challenge 2016- Sunflower Seeds

Now I should have had a killer sunflower harvest, we planted out four rows of around 40 seeds each, so I should be harvesting around 120 heads for storage, some for our own use for lovely homemade eating..  but a good amount of them were planning on being seeded and dried for future use in terms of extra fat and protein boost for both my rabbits and my fowl in the deep part of winter, I will need to buy a bag or two of black oil sunflower seeds instead of using my own. but some of them would also just be cut into hunks and tossed to the chickens.

P1080264

But then the drought happened and nothing came up.. I water and still nothing.. I planted a few seeds in a pot and they were slow but they came, so it was not the seed, it was the ground.. sigh.. fine..

but as plants will do a few slowly popped up and grew.. so I have a harvest of around eight plants in total, none of them are big like they should be. the whole seed head in some cases are the size of my normal cut it into hunks size.

P1080261

Most of them are this size, and as you can see by my hand, they are tiny.. they are normally 10 to 18 inches across, they one might be six to eight inches.. huge amount of difference.

P1080265

They are also a week to two weeks early in being pretty ready.. normally I harvest them second to third week of Sept, but they are ready..

Given the limited supply, I am going to just harvest the good ones and dry them for rabbit use for the momma’s in milk and for the rest that are so-so, I will just cut and feed them daily to the bird pens.

Did you grow sunflowers this year? Do you grow for your own use? or for the farm? Do you grow the big Russians or do you grow the smaller black oil sunflowers? How was your crop this fall?

Sept- Harvest Challenge 2016- Tongue of Fire beans

Hi Folks, For the new readers, sometimes I have small an sometime bigger challenges on the blog, sometimes I rock it and some times I stumble a bit but either way, I try an keep it as real as possible..

Sept is going to be a very busy month here on the farm.. so in keeping with that.. my wee sept challenge is all about the harvest.. its simple, each day share something, anything related to the farms harvest

I will take a few photos, maybe talk about the food or seeds or put it up with a recipe or show how I put it away for the pantry.. So if all goes well, there will be a harvest post daily, but that means on some- most days we will have double postings.

P1080232

The Tongue of Fire shelling bean is known as an Italian heirloom variety of Phaseolus vulgaris, and may also be referred to as Borlotto Lingua di Fuoco, and Borlotti bean. It is often compared to the cranberry bean in appearance and the kidney bean in taste. Like many beans, it can be picked young at approximately fifty-six days from planting and used as a snap or green bean or it can be allowed to fully mature and be shelled for its internal seeds at about seventy-five days.

Tongue of Fire beans are a favorite bean in Italy where they are used traditionally in soups and stews. Beans are an important ingredient in the classic Italian bean and pasta soups like minestrone

My hubby picked them right in the middle, so they were mature enough for the pod to turning an for the beans to be full an plump but not vine dry.. so I told him, please stop picking in that row 🙂 and I dried these in the dryer for storage.

Not all my beans did well in the drought, these struggle to get started and they are not near as big of plants as I was expecting but they were even in growth, they started blooming later then normal by at least ten days but starting into Aug they exploded, we started to get better rains, we have had two big rains, and four good-normal rains with two showers in aug and that was more rain and water then we got in june and july combined.

We will see what sept brings.. I am quite worried that the late start from seed to seedling, the late flowering and the slower growing habit plus use picking the first flush for fresh eating will mean that we might have issues getting these to the dry stage before frost

only 3 weeks to our first average frost date..

So where are you bean wise this year?

60,000 homes in my province have had their power cut off in 2016

Wow, I am listening to my local news radio. According to the person on the radio 60, 000 homes have had their power cut off this year due to bills that have not been paid. This number becomes even more staggering because by law, in winter they must turn the power back on, to allow people to have heat in their homes, they can in fact only turn the power off in warm months here.

One out of five people in winter will have a power bill that will be higher cost then their mortgage bill..  Please stop and think about that.. higher then the monthly cost of their house payment..

And the real kicker.. the government keeps pushing.. save power.. save power, turn this off, unplug this and that..  but because we “the people” have been conserved enough that the regulator board says, you saved enough energy in a group way that we did not make enough money so we are approving increases.

38% higher power bills over the past four years in the power rate hikes.. not the use, but the base costs for those paying those bills.

They were talking about the fact that one third of all funds going from our  charity groups in our province are going to help people keep the lights and power on. WOW!

There is a national wide saying that is growing bigger and  bigger.. Do you eat or do you heat!

A number of folks have been talking about the fact that they are choosing to eat less in order to pay the power bill.. I have to admit that this makes my heart break just a little.. I work in so many way to help the local food shed, I work hard to increase knowledge in regard to ways to save food.

The big “news” from the government is that we are going to save 30 to 50 dollars as they have stopped a old collection fee.. we have had this happen.. we have in fact seen that 30 dollars less per month.. its nothing, a drop in the bucket and offers no relief. I guess if I am trying to be kind, 30 x 12 would maybe add up to the costs of one small condo or apartment bill.

One of the other things talked about on the radio is that the lowest income folks can no longer find small apartments that include everything, that now you pay rent and your power-heating bill.

When its brought to the government, they have one thing they say.. YOU need to use less power.. but when we use less power, we still are paying.. I know.. I have had a summer power bill where I used 28 dollars worth of power and the bill was still 200.. yup.. that’s all the extras they tack onto my bill..  and don’t forget that they add a tax on the bill itself, We have already paid tax on the money earned, and out of that Tax’s money, I pay another tax on it on top..  Sigh!

As most folks know we are very power frugal compared to the average person given that my power bill reflects the costs of a whole farm, not just a house. According to my power company, I am in the top 10 percent of the best savers in my area.

We replaced all the older things in our house, new fridge, new stove and new washer and dryer, we use the shuttle chef to help save cooking costs, we use the crock pots to help keep costs down, why run the bigger oven spaces if I do not need to, plus they are backups as well.

We run a very cool house, we keep the heat off normal until nov and we tend to have it back off in very early spring, normally I close off the whole upstairs of the house in winter and do not heat it at all, We have no AC, we use Ceiling fans and sometimes a small little fan and we use black out curtains for the summer heat and to help keep the warmth in winter but in the winter, we also use passive solar heat.

Thankfully we have been ok with the fact that most of cloths are dried on the line outside, that we make things in bulk and save on costs, that we put on extra layers and lap blankets and so forth as needed, that we have extra thick feather blankets and so forth..

We are also looking at moving more and more to wood heat for the house.. which has its own costs and time to be given to it.. but it will be so worth it in the long run

However we have a major game changer coming..  Operation Beloved BattleAx  (aka my mom 🙂

Last year my mom came in the fall for six weeks, she struggled with the cooler house and trust me it was not cold, heaters got turned on months early and it increased our power use for everything, laundry, showers, extra cleaning and the extra room heater, which while very good on power use, it was electic use but it made more sense to add a single room heater to the area’s my mom was then to heat the whole house. It increased the basic power bill by just over 200 for the four weeks.

Yesterday my mom said.. let’s have a ice machine like Big Brother Does. I stopped working on what I was and went HUH!? and then said.. ugh No.. I am not paying to have an ice machine plugged in.. we had a pause.. and I said.. really, Ice cube trays in the freezer.. I had to laugh a little.. but I know my dear mom needs little extra’s but on some things we are going old school.. we pay to run the freezers, and if she wants four  six or a dozen trays filled and frozen daily and moved over into a bag so she can have as many as she want.. No problem, that can happen but to add a extra machine that is used maybe once or twice a day max..

She will get as much ice as she would like, and I will keep the power use down 🙂 Win-Win

It did make my head stutter  for a few seconds though..LOL

Now after being honest on something that was both funny and a tiny bit huh to me.. my mom does need more heat and more cooling then we do. I think a propane fireplace in the new area will go along way, so will careful placement of windows, ceiling fans but I expect that for at least a few rooms we will need to consider AC for her

And we are going to be heating the upstairs as well as we are going to be building a Master Bedroom, sitting room and half bath on the main floor so that mom does not need to do the stairs, it will be on the side of my main old part of the house using my entry door off my current deck into my dining room-kitchen area.

So not only are we going to be adding in the regular costs of a third person, but we will be adding in heating the upstairs in winter but we are also increasing our basic floor space and we will be adding in AC for at least the new rooms.

I am going to find it a challenge and half to figure out how to use less power in other ways to balance out the bill.. It will be a mix of allowing time to figure out what the basic add in costs are.. I am expecting them but  I do believe that I can work with it..

I am up to the challenge of figuring it out..  How is it going in your neck of the woods? Do you have a ever increasing power bill? Have you been lowering the power use but still seeing the bill go up?

Bean Canning Recipe

2013-01-01 1295 (600x450)

Sausage and Beans

I have made this recipe a few times now, its still yummy!

I wanted to can up a batch of white beans in tomato sauce for the pantry use, so this is a large batch, as I canned most of it, and baked off just enough to try out the new bean pot for supper.

One bag of white beans, soaked overnight, drained, rinced and put to a slow simmer in a large pot, I drained them once, rinced and refilled with pre-boiling water and simmered again, till tender to the bite.

At that point, I drained them, and in the pot, I put a bit of good lard, two finely diced onions, six cloves of garlic and cooked till clear, then I added in one quart of tomato sauce, and one quart of diced spiced tomato’s, 1/4 cups of fancy molassies, one tbsp. of salt, one full tbsp. of montreal steak spice. This was brought to a simmer to allow the flavours to meld.

Then I canned up eight pints adding a touch extra water to top up the jars as it was very thick then I took the rest of the beans, added in a extra cup of water and baked at 350 for around an hour and half, I diced up some of my homemade sausage , add it in and baked for another half hour..

Elderberry Syrup -Putting up for winter use

This weekend, we needed to stop at bulk barn and always I am amazed at the prices of things, a tiny bottle of Elderberry Honey Cough Syrup was closer to 20 Canadian then it was to 15 a bottle    At 16.99 for a tiny bottle, it seemed quite high, but to be far when I looked at the next store where we needed to mail out a letter, it was inline with commercial cough syrups and in some cases a bit less.

I love having the control of everything from the plant to the flowers to the berries to how they are picked and processed to how they are stored.. its gives me a piece of mind.. I know what is in that bottle..

Its been a very poor year for the berries, first the flowers were so tiny and small compared to normal due to the drought but we got rains at just the right times and the elders went into fruit production and while they were again much smaller and drier than normal, they were coming in..

P1070693

And then the birds came.. O my the birds.. I headed out with buckets to my favorite picking area’s and came back empty-handed to say the least.. even on my own food forest, the birds where picking them clean.. the only bushes that produced are my very few yard bushes where the farm cats made sure that other than the geese and chickens getting the very lowest berries, the rest where left alone..

P1080204

I got my lowest Elderberry yield in 12 years, only 6 pints of finished product to put into the pantry, It’s enough for the medical uses but it’s not enough for many extra’s with it, that’s for sure..

Elderberry Syrup Just Another Day on the Farm

If we go by the cost in the store, boy o boy does it have value though.. 6 pints at the store prices of that company that I saw in Ontario, Canada worked out to 272 dollars worth, and normally health food stores are more than the bulk barn is.

Now assuming you have more berries this year and you want to figure out a few uses for the juice or syrup you are putting up.. here are a few for you!

A few idea’s on how to use this syrup.

Hot Elderberry Tea

  • 2 TBS of Syrup
  • One cup boiling water

Sparkling Elderberry

  • 3 TSB Syrup
  • Ginger ale or sparkling Water

Can be used on Pancakes, or drizzled on fruit or cooked meat, or one bagel with cream cheese etc.

You can take 1/4 cup syrup, mix with ginger and tsp of red wine vinegar to make a quick and tasty sweet/sour sauce, you can mix it with vinegar and drizzle on for a salad dressing

Destemming Elderberry video for juice making

This works well fresh or frozen, make sure the bunch is placed in the same direction as they are growing down so they will pop off very easily, use the solidness of your hand to help but it should not be any true pressure.  If you are getting a number of very tiny branches, go gentler on the pressure.

Keeping it real on the farm- Grapes in the food forest

These are not wild grapes, they are eating and jelly grape vines that were carefully selected for our area but they were allowed to run wild, they were planted into the food forest and they were allowed to climb a support tree there, and climb it they did..

Grapes gone wild in the food forest

Grapes gone wild in the food forest

The grapes are hanging well over our heads, some are ten plus over our heads, most will be able to be gotten with the ladder in place.. at least 50 percent of the harvest could be harvested from the back side of the tree, the non-sun side. where the grapes were just hanging in little clusters down.

Patrick thinks he can help harvest the grapes above our head if he hits them with his paw!

Patrick thinks he can help harvest the grapes above our head if he hits them with his paw!

The Leaves took a heck of a beating, hey all have tons of little holes in them, the best leaves to harvest for canning are a vine that grew up and out and found a spot along a fence line, it raced off and while it is young and did not produce any fruit, it has lots of great looking leaves for me to harvest and can up..

IMG-20160828-00548

These grapes have amazing depth of flavours this year in the drought

We picked two huge bowlfuls of grapes, and filled the Juicer to the full line and let it go.. beautiful quarts of outstanding juice to be made into syrup or jellies..  The juicer makes the flavour so deep and rick compared to the simmering I am used to, so clear as well..

I have a lot of extra grape vines, I intend to cut them this fall and make a few grape vine wreaths for the farmstead..  how often do you prune your grapevines in the food forest, every year like you would for the main gardens or every second or third year.. Do you let them climb up the tree enough to need a ladder?

Crash, and its gone

A unnamed purrpot or pots, I was downstairs , they were up, decided that the table cloth was a grand toy. sadly my laptop was on the table an it did not take the chance to learn to fly well and gravity did the rest..

So my fairly new thankfully cheaper laptop got replaced with another back to school special, its bigger, heavier and they say more ruggedly made, we will see.. but it was very reasonable an then some.

After getting some extra shopping done, having company an such, I have been hiding from the crazy afternoon heat and spending three hours or so, getting it all set up and that includes getting the blog up and logged in for posting. So this is my test post 🙂

Love this photo despite the eye goop, he had been playing in the hay, keeping it real on the farm, he caught his first mouse. They took away my way to post in the format I am used to, so it will interesting to learn the new one or figure out how to get the old settings back.. here goes!
