Orange Rhubarb Chutney Recipe

Rhubarb Orange Chutney.
8 cups frcsh chopped rhubarb, 1 cups of chopped onions, 1 cup of golden raisins, 3/4 cup of apple cidar vinager, zest of two oranges and the fresh done juice of them, plus 1/4 cup of lemon juice, 3 cloves of galics minced 1 tbsp of finely chopped ginger root, 3 cups of brown sugar, 1/2 tsp of pickling salt, 1 tbsp of mustard seeds, 1 tsp of all-spice, 1 tsp of coriander and cinnamon, a pinch of red pepper flakes, and 1/4 tsp of ground cloves.

Stir in and bring to a boil at a med heat, then bring down to a simmer till butter thick, jars and hot water bath 15..

This rocks as a BBQ dressing on my pasture raised chicken breasts (which can have a stronger more gamey flavour to them) over a green salad.. It would be good with duck or turkey or any wild game meats.. vI also mixed it with canned stewed lamb and served it over mashed to rave reviews, and today I am going to use it like mincemeat and make tartlets with it..

I made small batch to try it and now I am making a double batch for canning it up for later use..

Nature vs Round up…sigh..

Here is my land at the moment as you can see a real mix..

Here is my fence line with my pulled back property line that I mow to help keep off over spray next to Farm R’s working fields..

Here is his fields…I know that when I asked years ago, he said Round-up but mn.. what a desert..night and day.. sigh.. at least he works with me and makes sure his boys don’t spray my safe zone, that happened one year with new hire and I showed him the drift and its never happened since.  So do you live next to someone that uses things on their land, that you would personally choose not to? and if so, have you created your own version of a buffer zone?

Food Storage Friday Report and Farmgate Update for 2012

I am thrilled to say that my pantry and cold cellar are holding well, I have been successful at getting to the point that with the main items required that are based on the garden each year that I am hitting a two year mark, which means if I was to loss my tomato crop this year, I would have enough to hold me over till next year etc.

I have been blessed to not have had a single frost for any of my hard fruit tree’s and my soft fruit bushes and plants all made the winter and are looking wonderful at this time. The garden is going in starts and spurts but the greenhouse is full and this weekend is full of promise..

I have stopped in over the past ten days or so at most of my bigger wild pick area’s and they are doing well, and I do believe that there will lots of fruit there as well..  My ewe’s outdid themselves this year and between the pig, Marty and all the “wanted” but wow extra lambs in sets of twins, am currently looking at my pantry, freezer and my farm and I am just in awe and humbled by how the coming year looks!

In keeping with what I wrote above, I am thrilled to annouce, that I will be doing a very limited amount of farmgate sales this year.. I have created a for sale page, but while I will put up what is available when, I mainly want that page to be a way to connect with me, so that I can create a email list to keep you in the loop.

So if you are local to Ottawa/Rockland/Cornwall area I might have something now and again that would interest you.. If you want to get put on a private mailing list for updates, contact me by leaving me a comment, its moderated and only I will see it. Everything will be in limited amounts, contact me directly for amounts and prices.

Giving yourself a health boost..

Boosting the immune system! Farmgal style..

So I had a very busy few days over the weekend and had a great time! but I also got exposed to a possable health threat, now I think? I got off lucky and the odds are very good that nothing will come of it..

I called my momma and it turns out that I had the very same thing a couple times as a young child and each time it was less then the time before and as an adult, we are less likely to get it then a child is..

Still, with my momma’s surgery date (hopefully, still waitin for some test results to come back) hanging over my head and knowing that I had pushed myself for a couple days with less sleep then normal, it seemed like a good idea to give my body a boost

The first thing I did was add in more sleep/meditation.. I can’t say just how important finding time to calm your body and your mind in prayer.

The next thing I added in more of was WATER! Lots and lots of extra water, flushing your system and making sure that you are up on the water is very important.

The comes food- A large apple per day, a full cucumber per day, fresh greens, including nettles, wild violet tea with raw local honey, reducing as much white suger as possable, staying away from meat for the moment, apple cider vingar 2x daily.

then I made a wash of apple cider vinager with simmered cloves as my face rince..

And then time will give me my answer… but I think I will be just fine..

So what do you do to give your body and health a massive boost rapidly when you need to?

Garden Monday

Well, I didn’t get much done in the garden on the weekend, but hubby worked on it for a bit on the saturday when he was puttering around..

he got a new row of strawberries done, plus cleared the area for all the wonderful plants that Deb shared with us, we got a whole little area planted with just them, still  need to get some ground cover down on them but they are all coming along well, and I look forward to watching them spread and fill that whole area over the next few years till its ready for little bits to be taken out and split for other areas of the garden..

The apple tree, the crabapples, the blackchokeberry are all in bloom now, still waiting on the late cherries and the peach to bloom yet..

Need to have my first pulling and crop of rhubarb over the next few days..

Wild violets are in bloom and will be working with them this week as well..

The apple mint is growing like crazy and I need to step up the harvest on it.. Stay tuned for a awesome recipe using it soon!

The potato’s are coming up, and these were overwintered from our own cellar and then planted in the spring!

While I know that most foks see these and break out the weed and feed! but I see this lovely covering of a amazing plant that I can eat its leaves, its roots and I have been waiting for them to get this bountiful as I have wine on the mind! HMMMM, homemade Dany wine or mead..

Long, Long SCA Day but it was good time..

Farmgal got busy helping put on a SCA style lunch for a hundred plus folks

Only got limited photos as I was busy working for most of the day, including missing a two hour seminar on working the lucet.. sigh… another day as they say.. plus I missed the heavy crossbow talk .. pout..

One of the nicest things about the events is that they are so family friendly, I didn’t get any photos with little ones that don’t show faces so won’t post them.. but I also adore how sweet all the couples are from young to old 🙂
