Green Smoothies -Round Three

So, here is the offical Dr. Oz Green Drink

1/2 cup spinach, 1/2 cup chopped Cucumber, 1 Stalk Celery, 1/2 tsp Gingerroot, a pinch of Parsley, 1/2 an apple, 1tsp lime and lemon Juice. Puree till smooth. I cut down the portions to make it one serving instead of 4.

So I have done a fair amount of updates and tried a few add on’s to the orginal recipe, to read more about it, check out Green Smoothies Round two. Today’s tweek rocked, earning for only the second time a 8 out of 10 rating, which was the basic recipe with one cup of fresh pinnapple added with whatever natural juice it produced.. this created a lighter green drink but it added a great flavor to the drink overall..

I am sure Canned Pinnapple in its natural juice with no sugar added would also be great, the only issue I can see if that as its a acid fruit, and the can’s are lined with BHP, that although you hit the fact that the fresh pinnapples are so not local, its half of one and half of another in terms of what is better.

So today’s Green Smoothie marks the seven day of drinking my greens, and I figure also a good time to share a bit of what I have learned this week, I promise for those that don’t want to read about green Smoothies, I will try and limit myself to no more then a one a week update with added info, recipes and pictures.

Ok, so a week on and here are a few of my overviews

This is a NOT a frugal or cheap or Sole drink, anyway you cut it, if you are being really frugal this is not a good drink, I figured out that each drink(16 oz) costs on average of between 1.25 to 1.50. Now compared to buying a fruit smoothie its a steal and if you could trade a bought coffee for the green drink, it is about the same cost. However given that I normally can keep my “bought” food bill down to 50 dollars per two weeks, this drink has blown a hole in that so big, it feels like a grand canyon. Then add in that the things the drink are made off, have no change of being local at this time of the year. ahhhh.

Its better to drink it with a straw, so far I have gotten a few folks to try it and we all agree, better with a straw then without

Blending longer is better, while it may looked blended by  20 to 30 seconds, give it another 15 to be sure.

Make it fresh and Drink it right away, and cold is better then room temp.

Now on to the good points,

You can mix it up in regards to what kind of fruit and still keep all the goodness in it but not feel like you are in rut.

If you make it a meal, its cost becomes reasonable for most folks, I can and do pull whole meals together for less then 1.50 a portion that is for sure but I think that price range for most folks is within what would be considered frugal.

You do feel better on it, it has made a clear difference in the amount of energy I have and that is well worth it, if it does even half of what Dr. Oz says it can for the rest of the my body health, that’s a bonus for sure.

My last point is a bit of a surprising one to me.. it truly does make me feel full and I stay full and not hungry for a couple hours after drinking it. I didn’t think that a drink would be able to do so. Given that per my add up, the basic drink is about 100 calories and that with the different fruits/yogurt, come in between 200 to 250.. any way you cut it, its a low cal meal that makes you feel full for a good while.

Sugar Scrub’s

Brown Sugar Body Scrub

Recipe for a single use

  • 2 Heaping Tablespoons of Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 Tablespoon of organic Almond Oil

Mix together, then pick up about half a teaspoon at a time and give your face, and neck a scrub, and then I do my hands afterwards, I personally let sit on face/neck while doing hands and then give it second rub and then rinse off with fresh warm water and nice soft face cloth and be prepared to be amazed at how soft your skin feels and at your “healthy” glow that folks will notice.

Now this is truly frugal, I paid 6.50 for the almond oil and 3 dollars for the bag of brown sugar, I would guess that a single use would be about ten cents max, compared to a single use scrub from the drugstore that ranges between one to three dollars plus tax

Blueberry Buttermilk BuckWheat Cake Recipe

BlueBerry Buckwheat Cake

  • 1/4 cup of Oil
  • 1/4 cup of fancy Molasses
  • 1 Large Egg (Duck)
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup of Stone Ground BuckWheat
  • 1 an 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp of Baking Powder
  • 1/2 salt
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries

Add the first four and blend together, then add the buckwheat, mix and let sit for a min to soak in the milk, then add the rest of the flour, BP and Salt, Lightly mix, and only then add the frozen blueberries and stir in, bake in a eight by eight greased pan.

This is a very flavorful cake and is very light to eat but has good staying power for keeping you to feel full for a good while.

If you want, add a sprinkle of brown suger on top, this can be made into a muffin or a cake, your choice. Would make a dozen small muffins or a small cake.

I was thrilled to find local (within a hundred miles) stone ground fresh locally grown buckwheat for sale at my local cheese maker’s store..awesome, its so fresh it needs to be kept in the fridge.

We both grow our own blueberries but we also wild pick in the local woods, and are starting to get a good feel for a few spots that no one else seems to pick, and they add amazing flavor to our homegrown berries.

DH works off the farm and he takes a late breakfast, and lunch and all his inbetween snacks, and so its always a challange, but a good one to keep him in these meals. He typically takes a homemade breakfast, lunch is often leftovers with tweeks from the dinner before, but to mix it up, I also make different soups and stews etc so that he can take breaks an or have something a bit different. I am so glad that DH is willing to do this, it would not make a lot of sense to me to have him eating processed foods for these meals, after being so careful in regards to what we eat at home.

As a dear friend put it.. “he is so! not hard done by”

Miss Piggy Update

Its only fair that I update on Miss Piggy, if I am going to update on Girl.. well Miss Piggy is doing great, she is a funny little pig, she has to be one of the most talking pig’s I have ever owned and she often stands on her rear legs and turns her head sidewise, I thinks its a way for her get around her big ears and see you..

If you can’t see her in her pen, its because she will be all burrowed in her big straw bed, she is very clean, as I find most pigs are, and uses only one corner of her pen for bathroom, making keeping it clean much easier then Girl, who used to go outside and kept her bedding area clean but since her move to the big barn, now goes everywhere.. sigh..

I would guess that Miss Piggy has at min doubled in size since we got her home or at least it sure seems that way when you look at her, she is a very solid healthy piglet..

I find her hair to be stronger and bigger then I remember on my other pigs (which were a different breed or breeds) and could not resist a close up for you..

Girl Update

Well , its a new month and time for a Girl photo update, she is doing very well, eating lots of hay daily now, as much if not more then a average sheep and I think personally she is looking good, she does have a good winter coat on her which is needed because its cold! and its only going to get colder for next two months.

She loves her daily outings and I wish that I could just give her free access to the outside like the sheep but don’t think she is ready for it, when I tried, she parked herself behind the little barn by the house and just bawled.. so back to her nice big box stall with hay feeder and water in the barn after her walks.

She is changing color on me.. her face is almost totally black now and the black continues to come in all over her body, I wonder if its her adult color to be or if she will keep some red and or change colors a bit with the seasons.. only time will give me the anwers of course.

Still in training and boy do the folks around here sure slow down to have a double look when she is in her little red harness and pulling her little log or sled behind her while we work out in the fields. Can’t really blame them it must be a funny site indeed.

Local Annual Bird Count

The above photo was taking at Sleeping Giant Provincal Park by N Roy while JADOTF jabbered in her ear.

It always starts the same way, uffff, UFFF comes out of a little furry throat, staring out the living room window showing me that something is up, and the little nose is pointing to the front road, so peek out and see a big van slowly creeping and then stopping by my laneway.. then nothing, finally window’s open and a door opens and a few colorfully dressed older folks appear with extra large binoculars, and stare for what seems like forver at my farm, while the third person has a clipboard and is writing like mad..

Yup, its the New Year, and the annual local Bird Count is happening, and best of luck to all the folks that are out and about today.
