Did you know that we should feed our children real food?

Really, we need a study to tell us this?? How can it be any surprise to anyone that a child’s brain needs the fresh healthy food in order to grow and function at its highest level..

Anyway here is the info..

Parents hoping for smart kids might want to focus first on what’s going into their youngsters’ bellies, not their heads.

A diet, high in fats, sugars and processed foods in early childhood may lower IQ, while a diet packed full of vitamins and nutrients may do the opposite, suggests research published by academics in the University of Bristol’s School of Social and Community Medicine.

The study, published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, bases its findings on participants in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), which tracks the long term health and well-being of roughly 14,000 children born in 1991 and 1992.

Parents completed questionnaires, detailing the types and frequency of the foods and drinks their children consumed when they were three, four, seven, and eight and a half years old.

This information was then quantified to produce a dietary pattern score for three different types of diet: “processed,” high in fats and sugars; “traditional,” high in meat and two vegatables; and “health conscious,” high in salad, fruit and veggies, rice and pasta.

IQ was measured using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children when the kids were eight and a-half-years old.

Dietery factor

The results show after taking account of potentially influential factors, a diet consisting predominantly of processed foods at three years old was associated with a lower IQ at the age of eight and a half, regardless of whether the diet improved after that age.

Every one-point increase in dietary pattern score was associated with a 1.67 fall in IQ.

On the other hand, a healthy diet was associated with a higher IQ at the age of eight and a-half, with every one-point increase in dietary pattern linked to a 1.2 increase in IQ.

Dietary patterns between the ages of four and seven had no impact on IQ.

The authors say these findings, although modest, are in line with previous ALSPAC research showing an association between early childhood diet and later behavior and school performance.

 Early development

“Our research suggests that any cognitive/behavioral effects relating to eating habits in early childhood may well persist into later childhood, despite any subsequent changes (including improvements) to dietary intake,” said Dr. Kate Northstone, Research Fellow in the School of Social and Community Medicine.

The authors say the brain grows the fastest during the first three years of life, which could explain the study findings. They also point to previous research indicating head growth during the first three years in linked to intellectual ability as well.

Dr. Pauline Emmett, Senior Research Fellow in the School of Social and Community Medicine, added, “It is possible that good nutrition during the first three years of life may encourage optimal brain growth, advocating further research to determine the extent of the effect early diet has on intelligence.”

Dry itchy Scalp..ahhh winter hair care.

Well, the past couple days my head has been itchy, and the flakes are falling as fast as the snow outside.. Something had to be done..

This is what I call the cheapest hair care you can get.. so here goes.. first off, I have short hair, so I am doing short hair care, but this will work for long hair as well but for the first one, just do your head and the rinse can be good for your head and long hair..

2 Tablespoons of whole oatmeal, put in my coffee grinder and grind to a fine powder, put it into your bowl, add some warm water, scoop it up a little with a wash cloth and scrub your head well, then rince with warm water..

While you are doing that, warm up about half a cup or more depending on how much hair you have of vinager, I perfer either plain white or apple cider, get a clean cloth and soak it with the vinager for the short hair, and rub it all over.. Don’t rinse, let it air dry, you can expect your scalp to tingle but you should have no burning or itching, if so, rinse it out.. If your hair is very long, consider having a cup or two and pouring it over your hair while you bend over the bowl to catch it and do this two or three times making sure its all been given a good rinse.

This will stripe out all the gunky on your hair from shampoo’s, hair spray or gel etc.. and it will greatly help in reducing the dry skin itch for me..

Snow and Cold Wind Chills..

It offical, I am ready for winter to end! I know, I know, its not going to end till its good and ready and its been a good winter really, we had good weather up until Dec and really we have only “had” winter for about six weeks, but today as the wind blows hard enough to sneak in under my full head gear, and string my cheeks and ears, and pushes into me as I walk, make me want to curl up in bed with a good book, a big bowl of soup and huge pot of pepperment tea in teapot cosy to keep it warm..

Ha, like that’s going to happen LOL, the only good thing is when you are as tired and worn as I feel these days, when I do get to rest, Its deep and hard. I got a few hours off the farm last night at my little knitting gathering, and it was wonderful to be able to knit and visit by the wood stove, and catch up on the news and to share. Sometimes its so nice to just be the women folks gathered together.

Chilled Lambs

Well, it snowed here all day yesterday and looks like a bit though the night as well, its cold but typical for the time of year, but the windchill add’s quite a bit to it..

This was a well broke trail yesterday, today its all filled in and only my breaking of it yesterday just barely shows, you don’t want to go though this, at its deepest, its hits at least three feet

Well, the critters were happy to see me, and finally Carmel has had twins, one lovely strong little one, up and nursing well, and sigh, one that is laying down, weak and chilled.

I popped a finger in its mouth and its core temp is not bad, its clearly newborn but not as strong as I would like.. so I hold mom (who know’s that this is her little one and is not fighting me but also been a sheep, has no time for weak little ones, when she has a big strong one right there with her.. Little Chilled lamb does not want to suck.. Not a good sign, so milk a little out of mom’s full side, the other sib at the moment has a clear teat, and bundle up Miss Nobody down two layers of cloths for warmth and to protect her from wind chill and start trudging back to the house.

So first order of business after getting baby in the house is to get her checked over, looks good but still covered with birthing fluids, which means that I am now to.. so get her double wrapped in a wool blanket, and onto my big plastic heated dog bed to start gently warming her back up.. she is sleeping now, but has stopped shivering, and I will let her sleep for another few min and then see if she has a suck reflex to her and get a ounce of her mom’s colostrum in and then it will be a day of barn work, I don’t want this little one to become a bottle baby if at all possable, but I need to get her warmed up and nursing well before being left to fend on her own..

The key to remember is that you can’t feed a chilled baby even if its willing to nurse, as it will cause more problems to do so.. you need to warm the baby first, then offer small amounts at a regular time, never overfeed a little one.. small and often is just what momma would give and that is what we want to do as well.

So here is litttle Miss.. just before her rest, she has now had a bit of milk, still does not have a strong suck reflex but we got some in and she has enough energy to be standing  in her little crate, give her another hour and another tiny feed or two and we will see if we can get her strong enough to go back to the barn and join her mom and sib in the jug.

Once I get her settled down, I need to go back out and finish hauling hay and starting to shovel some snow..

Update: Wee One is with us and coming along, she is mouthy and getting much better at nursing either the bottle or her mom, her sibling is doing very well.. I only have a few more ewe’s to go and I am looking at the down hill part of this years birthing time, here is hoping that they are all normal births with no issues.

Rant Warning!

I am so pissed off!! Blasted Bloody Snowmobiler’s

Ok, let me back up, first off -I love that the farmer that owns all the land around us has to be one of the easiest person to get along with, don’t mess with his crops and he is will let you hunt, fish, forage, hike, snowshoe, cross country ski on his land, we even have a camp area by the river, and I love Snowmobiles, we used to have one on the farm, and we have at ton of trail’s in the forest down the road and those guys are great.

Tons of the local teens use the fields around us, and we have NEVER had a issue, they are respectful and out having good clean fun.. more power to you!

But I just got off the phone with said farmers wife to know let them know about the three jerks that were just here and hubby said he would get right on it and see if he could figure out who they are, and have a talking to them! and tell them to stay away from my farm..

The hounds let me know that they were there and no issue, I figure they are going to take the trail that everyone else has been using.. but no, the @#$^ come right up to my fence line, just gunning it and scare my very expecting sheep at the hay feeder and freak’s them out, bad enough right, and sheep being sheep, they turn as a flock and head for the barn.. then they gun DOWN MY FENCE Line totally freakin the already moving sheep, who now think these machines are chasing them..what the $#^%&?

By this time I am out the door, no doubt looking like a fish wife, as they take off down the road going god knows how fast, I didn’t get their plates but I got machine colors and jacket and helmet colors..

Checked my sheep over and they are stressed but settling down.. Why would anyone do that?? What the hell went thought those twits minds.. if they even have minds..  I don’t think they are from the area to tell the truth, never seen them before and I hope to never see them again!

God help someone that has no common sense or is just plain mean!

Guanciale-Its Ready..

So here is the finished Product, Sliced and ready for me to use in my planned recipes that I will be sharing soon, I am going Tradional for one, and Funky for the other..I should point out that while I did roast this off, its not finished being cooked, which will happen in the recipes.

Here is the whole peice minus the hide and the first big thick cut of fat, roasted from the oven.

After a eight days in the brine, its ready to come out, be well rinsed and baked for my planned uses, it would also be ready to be hung to dry as two other pieces were for later use, and then I am going to smoke them.. Below, Trimmed and covered with its dry Brine..

Well, here it is, in my family when we make head cheese, which means that Pork Jowls are part of that process and so I had never used them to make Pork Jowl Bacon, or a kind of Bacon, it is Bacon like but it has its own flavor and texture, its really good..

Buttermilk Bread Batch..

A Bread, don’t you just love it.. Made a big old batch of fresh buttermilk farmer bread this morning.. so first off, snuck off just enough to make breakfast flat breads.

Then scrambled some fresh eggs, a little fresh bacon, some onion, pepper, a little old aged white chedder and we have a fresh breakfast wrap.. Sunday breakfasts, you just gotta go that extra bit..

Then did the first raise, made two loafs of bread, One med Pizza and one small pan of six cranberry buns and one of six cinnamon buns..and set them to the second rise..

This pizza was so simple but the flavor combo’s were perfect, thich crust, a tiny bit of my best olive oil, pulled roasted rabbit, with some of our homedried plum tomato halfs and a little fresh chedder with onion from St. Albert Cheese factory with a touch of sea salt on the edges to give that hint of a salty bite to that sweet buttermilk crust..

Cranberry/Ginger Pull Apart Buns, Take one peice of dried sugared ginger and dice very fine, lay in a row in the middle of dough and then sprinkle a handfull of cranberries or dried cherrys on.

Cinnamon buns, I know, I know momma, they are not sticky buns, but I am trying to watch those calories a little bit here..

So last but least, is this loaf

Now if you are wondering what the heck, that’s what I said, when I lifted the wool cover and saw this, I am unsure which purr-pot was the offender, but someone put a paw where it didn’t belong.. thankfully because it was covered, it was still fine to bake.. but it no longer looks like the perfect loaf above.. BAD Purrpot.. good thing it tastes the same 🙂

Here is your recipe as requested, This is as close as I can get cuz to tell the truth I winged it like normal..

  • 1 and 1/2 cups warm water,
  • Mixed with 4 Heaping Tablespoons of Dry Buttermilk Powder in a Quart Jar -shake till well mixed, then sit.
  • Next 1/2 cup of warm water
  • 2 tbsp of sugar
  • 1 tbsp of bread yeast the old fashion kind
  • Allow to proof, then shake the jar good again and add to the yeast mix.
  • Add 1/4 cup good olive oil
  • 1tsp of salt, Mix all togther.
  • I used 3 an half green cups, so that should be 6 cups of all purpose flour, to make a very soft dough, think I might have used another 1/4 cup to get it right where I wanted it.. soft but no sticky for the kneeding..
  • House is cool, so my rises were long, the first a couple hours, the second about the same.. you want it to double in size for however that takes in your heated warm houses the books generally say an hour but I use a bit yeast and like longer raising times, you get alot more flavor that way.

For the breakfast flatbreads, the dough was used just after the kneeding, so I pull over my small egg size peices and set the rest to rising, I let them rest for ten min before starting the first one.. use a bit of flour and a good rolling pin and just keep working that dough, if you think it won’t give anymore and only six by six across.. just let it rest a min and work again.. each egg size peice will roll out to the size to about a regular dinner plate. Cook in a dry cast Iron at med heat, it does not take long at all, keep warm if you want by covering your finished plate with a clean towel.

I did very lightly grease the pans with my home rendered lard and they were baked in glass bread pans, I wanted that all over golden color, the bread tops where rubbed with butter for that soft finish on them.

Baked in a 350 oven till golden and hollow on the bottom tap..

Ripples had a surpise waiting for us

Someone fooled us, she didn’t bag up, and had her little one in the back pen where the sheepies sleep at night.. course everything seems to have gone right.

Moved to the jug for the first day to make sure everything is good, and wee puddin says, Its a good thing momma followed me in here. Ripple know the routine, we pick up baby, and they float about a inch or two off the ground to the jug from the back so that momma follows along with them, then Ripple figured out where she was going and ran to get in, cuz she knew that there would be a little grain waiting for her..

You checking up on me, my momma is in the hay feeder, and she’s been there awhile so I thought I would have a little nap while I was waiting..One of the Bubble Doubles

And here is my twin brother, don’t you just love his little black spot, already looking for trouble.. Opps, I think he might have found it.. Here comes Hay Baby..

Now there are all getting ready to rumble I mean bop and play.. Ok, I own it.. I like to watch my lambs, sleeping, playing, it don’t matter much, they are a hoot.

Gardening-A Canning Garden

I read this comment over at different blog, she just touched on it very briefly, in passing that she was going to plant a raised bed of something just for canning that year.. and it got me thinking about this post.

If you are really into trying to grow your own food and preserving it, that can include, drying it, freezing it, canning it or fermenting it, you have to look at the idea of not just a fresh eating garden but a well thought out and planned “Canning Garden”

If you want to grow and produce some garden products to help off-set the cost of critter feed(and with the rise in prices we are seeing on general crops) you can bet your booties that I do, that means another area that needs to be given over to gardening.

So how would you figure this out, well the first thing to do would be to figure out what your own family uses on a regular base’s, so while this might seem like a bit of work, consider having a list, and jotting down what you are using for a week, two weeks or even better a normal month..  Do you typically eat corn, or is it pea’s, do you tend to use tomato sauce for almost everything, are you a potato family or are you more into veggie stirfries..

A good example, some folks love pickles, so if you are already buying one big pickle jar per week or every two weeks, then growing and making pickles makes total sense, but if you family does not typically eat pickles, what is the point of growing, picking, cleaning and putting up 40  jars of something that is just going to sit there.

For myself, its swiss chard, I know, I know its good for you, and I love my spinach and my different greens, some spicy, some zesty, even some bitter.. hmmm so good but I don’t like Chard, I have tried different colors, kinds and different ways to cook and serve them, I almost always end up feeding it to the critters, not a bad thing, given that it grows like a weed and its really good for them.. but if I am being honest with myself, Chard should count as a) giveaway item to take to friends or b) part of the critter garden.

So think carefully about what and how much you want to plant of something, on the flip side.. we can’t seem to ever grow enough beans, Every year we plant more beans, we extend the bean growing season, the bean growing rows and still somehow despite my best efforts to grow enough beans that we can freeze a good amount.. nope.. they just get eaten.. I have seen my DH sit with a big bowl of beans and just eat them fresh as a snacks.. now this is not a bad thing, but it does not get those beans into my freezer. Going to add another 30 or 50 foot row of Canning Garden only.

So what things do I know right now that I should plan a extra couple rows for the Canning Garden.

  1. Tomato’s
  2. Potato’s
  3. Pea’s
  4. Bean’s -Green and Drying Kinds
  5. Spinach
  6. String Nettle
  7. Peppers
  8. Carrots
  9. Turnips
  10. Pumpkins
  11. Winter Squash
  12. Corn
  13. Cucumbers
  14. Summer Squash
  15. Beets
  16. Rubarb
  17. Strawberries
  18. Rasberries
  19. Celery
  20. Onions

If you were planting a Canning Garden what do you think you would need to plant extra of?
