Temp Kitten Foster Momma

Good Morning

Well a dear friend of mine (who works long hours) had one of her farm momma cats go MIA leaving a litter of four tiny kittens, around four weeks old or so.. They are just breaking into their first kitten teeth..

I offered to take them as a temp foster momma to get them over the hump stage of suddenly being off milk, getting bigger and stronger and learning to eat wet food and kitten kibble etc.

So we hauled in the big kitty tower which we had gotten years ago, and has been used in so many ways over the years 🙂 love those things.

Got the babies first good feeding into them, soft warmed canned food, they were attack it hungry, little paws spread out, growls coming out of their mouths, then we moved them over to 24 hours access to broken up baby kitty kibbles and water, they are eating very well, but it will be a few days before they really settle in and start to gain some of the weight they had lost.

They are such a friendly group of purrpots, they are just adoreable.. There is a long haired fluffy Calico, two bigger short haired blue boys (like the color of a Russian blue cat) and one tiny short haired little all black miss thang.. she is the one I am most worried about..

As the clear Runt of the litter, she was already smaller then the sibs.. Extra care was given to warm her up.. A chilled kitten can’t properly digest its food. The fact that she felt cool to the touch on such warm days also told me that she was struggling.

Morning Update..
Kittens are rocking it.. they are all eating, drinking and full of themselves, they had a good old fashioned play time on the living room floor while their morning cleaning was done, they have found their sleep box with fake sheepskin, they have learned to climb the walls to get to the different levels and play jump and whack you from above, they have figured out the one area is bathroom (working on that) and then there is eat and sleep area.. they have found the kitty toys, so far the bell that jingles does nothing for them but they like the strings that hang, but mainly they just play among themselves.

Yesterday, the did go outside into a safe play pen for a couple hours for fresh air and more room but its raining today so its a inside day.. good for the pasture, the well and the gardens! I will try for photos at some point..

First of the new potato’s

Now this is a meal fit for a farmer..

2013-01-01 2437 (600x442)

Beef and onion patties, fresh new potato’s with butter and fresh garden pea’s..

The only things that didn’t come from the farm itself was the montreal steak spice in the meat patties, I should have thought about that more and used my own herbs.. o well next time, a true 0 mile meal none the less.

Got the last big picking, shelling and into the freezer for the spring pea’s, we will have fall pea’s crop as well, but this weekend the pea plants will get pulled up, anything I missed dealt with and beans will be planted in their place for a fall harvest..

Today, however I pulled up my first potato plant and got rewarded with a pot full of fresh little baby potato’s the kind that will cost you 5 dollars per two pounds in the store 🙂 The row they came out of it is the fresh eating row and then it will be replanted by the end of the month as well for a second crop and fall harvest..

What is finishing in your garden and what is being replanted for the second harvests..

2013-01-01 2410 (489x600)

Barn hen had 13 eggs under her and she hatched them all, five black and whites, five barred whites, and three chocolate and white, hope there is a good mix of sex’s. They got moved from the big barn, where there are big old hoof’s around to the nursery tractor, and are settling in well, already trying the fresh greens and bug hunting.

Our Beloved Munchkin has crossed over the rainbow bridge

My heart is breaking, our much loved 15 year plus year old sweet purrpot Munchkin has left us. Munchkin was the first shared fur kid that Hubby and I got together, she was a Yellowknife rescue..

I was getting routine vet care done on Priss and there were cats and kittens everywhere, I asked the vet tec, why so many as I had been there before, and they would normally have couple cats, but they were so full, overflowing into the walkway, the low income housing had gotten a new manager and he had sent notices, that the no pet was being enforced, they could either keep their homes or their pets..

The vet said at the back, a holiday was coming up an he needed x amount of cages cleared for boarding by Friday or they would need to be put down, it was weds, and I took Priss home and went to hubbies office and said, we can’t save them all but we can save one.. you can pick the kitten or cat, I had four that had caught my eye.

He picked out Munchkin (but we named her formally Aura) which lasted all of five min, she moved with us across Canada, she sat and purred me better over the loss’s of my babies, she was always there for me..

To know her was to love her, anyone who meet her adored her be it friends or family, or total strangers, when I was showing some of my purebred Purrpots, they did well, earning championships and titles in both Canada and the USA but it was Munchkin in Household Pet that Rocked it out..

Trunks full of huge rosettes, and who made it into the top ten in Canada, she would win over the judge and the crowds with her purr, her sense of play, her goodness an sweetness that poured from her.

She liked farm life but never really stopped being a house kitty, laying in the sun and fresh air on the deck was great fun, but she was a lover, not a hunter..

Her health began having issues last year, and she had antibodic’s, she was on special food, and wet food daily, she was given extra care in the winter with warm heated beds.. We had a few scares but pulled though them.

And then it was time.. I wish that we didn’t have to make those choices, that our much loved critters could just go to sleep an not wake up but it rarely happens that way.. There is that moment when you know you are just being selfish, that your desire to keep her with you one more day, not because its the best thing for her at that time but because you know that there is going to be a huge missing part in your world.

You will be missed, you were loved, you were my heart cat, and I know, that there will never be another munchkin for me..

Only Priss is left with us, she is 17 this year and so far going strong..

Salmon on a bed of fresh garden pea’s..

Ok, this is so simple but so good..

Fat of your choice in the cast iron, a lovely piece of Thawed Salmon, ideally with skin on to crisp.. Preheat the pan to med-high heat and then add the salmon, cook till just done.. Add your choice of sea salt and cracked pepper.

In a different pot, bring salted water to a boil and put in your pea’s for just a min, you want to “just” cook them.. When the salmon is cooked, pull it out and add the just done drained pea’s to the hot salmon juice-fat- with salt-pepper, just toss for another 60 seconds or so. If you wanted to do so, you could put a little bit of cream in there but Its so good as is, that its really not needed..

2013-01-01 2406 (600x450)

I’m not sure that this is even a recipe given that it has so few things to it, but trust me, pea’s and salmon go together very well.. I have seen a pea-salmon-cream pie that looks delightful, and I might make a small one for myself, as my hubby does not eat fish..

Red Currents are needing daily picking now!

I should be putting some of these away for winter, I should be making some into fresh jelly, but I’m not..

2013-01-01 2351 (600x450) (2)

Instead I am boiling this babies up and making fresh red current juice for the fridge, the house smells awesome as they are simmer on the stove.  I made a lovely red current Elderflower iced tea that was a true delight. Have you tried that combo. What is your favorite way to use red currents.
