Bruise Report!- one week in..

Well, I will be the first one to admit that I was stunned at how well this is healing, I am very sure that it is in large part due to the comfry, violets, lambs ear and plaintan I have been using, I have never seen a bruise recover colorwise at this rate, you can see the pooled blood change in the hour that its one.. amazing..

However what it can’t change as easily is the hard lump that runs four inches wide by about six inches in length in the middle of the bruised area, its clearly going to take a good while to clear.

I have increased my green and orange colored foods, I am making sure I get carrot, or sweet potato daily, I make sure I get at least double the normal amount of fresh greens and I am being careful to pick greens that pack a heck of a punch health wise, I have added in eating fresh mints/dill daily in some way.

I continue to make a drink a pot of nettle and wild violet tea often, and use a healing salve to boot..

And here it is a week later! sorry didn’t get the post up on the right day but the photo was taken on the correct day 🙂

Sometimes Shopping can be fun!

Well, I admit that I had my eye on a certain farm sale, when a farm has been in the same family for over a hundred and twenty years and they say. cheese making supplies, butter churns, dairy items and large cookbook collection, you have me hooked.

They also had lots of horse drawn equipment and carts etc.

We were late, late up, chores took longer then planned as we needed to double up on a few things before leaving etc but we made good time and arrived only half hour late, but the wagon with all kinds of household things that I would have been interested in was done, the second large wagon appeared to be filled with house reno stuff.. dang!

Then came the first box of cookbooks, happy dance of joy, that at least I didn’t miss, payed a very fair price on the first couple box’s, even better on the next and then took the whole lot of seven left for five bucks.

Yup 17  boxes of cookbooks and farm related, homestead related books from 1910 to now..

paid up, and we loaded a wagon and caught a ride down a very long driveway, the drive, the company and the haul made it all a very good trip

Yesterday I got a call from Farmer T and asked if I wanted to come off the farm for a few hours to head to town for a bit of a girls trip.. we headed off to the big city on a dress hunt. it was fun, it was filled with laughs, it was shocking, the color choices, the outfits, wow, let me tell ya, if you dressed like that back in my teen days you would have been called a nasty word..

Trying to find that amazing and perfect meet in the middle, in style, cute, flirty and a little darling, when you are told that you want that dress to “pop”, you got to find one that does just that..

We had been though a number of dress’s and shops and then “the one was found” it was perfect for her in so many ways! and then I got to do something I normally only get to do when I am out in alberta, I got to have the joy of finding little things to go with that matched and gift them! It does a heart good be able to do this.

Giving gifts to adults is well and good and I like to do so, but when you give a gift to a child and you get it right, their eyes light up, they are so alive and in the moment! Perfect!

It was a blast, we were able to find matching hair, clutch purse and funky sunglasses to go with the dress itself, and even better, everyone was  in and out at the mall, we are all happy to go, happy to share that time but we were all just as happy to get out of that canned air, that indoor and enclosed space and get back to the country..

It was a good weekend, it was filled with shopping, I did get a few things on sunday, I got some really nice fabic headbands/head coverings, and of course had to bring home a few treats for the hubby..

Our final buying item of the weekend was some fresh just done bales of hay from last week, its in good condition and its perfect for my milking cow!

Pea Season has arrived.. well the first crop anyway..

The early planted pea’s are in full swing at this point in time.. so so yummy, I planted four different kinds this year.. so far, I am really liking this one..

2012-12-24 495 (500x375)

I expect that almost all of these ones will end up being eaten fresh with a few being allowed to go to the dry stage for seed stock for next year.

2012-12-24 496 (375x500)

Out of all my pretty white flowering pea vines, I have one purple/pink vine, I am for sure going to keep seed from it and see if I can get more of these o so pretty pea plants.

2012-12-24 494 (500x375)

So how many pea’s do you plant, do you many do them for fresh eating or do you freeze pea’s for winter use, I will admit that I do a few but not many, I find pea’s in winter are a real treat in our house.

Straw Bale Gardens Update and More Planting info..

Ok, so the plants we put out into the round bales last weekend are doing well, they have settled and we are seeing clear new growth on them, this is a very good thing an I have figured out how to water them..

2012-12-24 484 (500x375)

The other bales have all been seed planted out and while I am a little worried about the fact that things are getting a later start then I would like, we still have enough time before the first frost dates per the packages and we have lots of ways to extend the season and the bales themselves inside are composting and that extra heat will make the plant growth be crazy wild, as long as I can keep them watered! If this works there are eight plants per bale, and they will grow up, over and down the sides of the bales into the area around it.

2012-12-24 486 (500x375)

I expect they will explode out by next week, I have a whole week of heat, and daily rain coming.. we are racing to get more and more planted at this time, as its perfect weather for it..

2012-12-24 490 (375x500)

The Squash bale row is doing amazing!, its rocking along, this was planted three weeks ago and ever hill has at least two plants per, some have three and I am still trying to figure out if I want to just let them be on that, as I plan to mow around the site and between the tree’s and then allow them to run over the ground and down and out the other side of the tree’s to the ditch hill, they are all very able to lift their leaves up and get the sun they need if I give a tiny helping hand on that..

2012-12-24 489 (500x375)

Very, very pleased with how this is working out so far this year, even when bit of green show though the bedding, it takes nothing to pull it out and throw it down outside the area as greens

Brandy

2012-12-24 483 (500x399)

It was pointed out to me that I had not posted a update on Brandy, and I think that is because she is pretty much a pasture pet for the past little while, I have been crazy busy on different things and so we went from daily training sessions (ground and agility) to three times a week, I have not been riding and we have not been out using her on the cart, the wagon or the ditch digger.. as odd as it seems we did more in the winter then we are right now.. that is SO, So wrong..

But its also life, we have a couple long weekends coming up and I am going to get her saddled up and ridden even if its just by DH, and or harnessed up even if its to hitch her to the cart and go for a bit

I would love to say that I plan on riding her but not until my mounting leg heals a bit more that’s for dang sure.

Now to be fair to Brandy, she does meet and greet us at the gate, follow us around the yards and pastures and barn like a big horse dog.. if you are outside, brandy is sure to be there, and we do the basic’s but none of the extra’s.

I should feel bad about this but the truth is, Brandy is having her needs meet, not just in the sense of food/water/shade/barn/pasture but also in the fact that she interacts with her people at least a dozen plus times a day, she is still groomed and sprayed down daily, even gimpy, I made sure of that..

So while I certainly am not reaching, we are steady as she goes, in a happy way.. Just to see her and hear that soft nicker, even on my worst day, she raises my mood in a good way..

Hurting and Healing.

Well, the last 72 hours have been a bit stressful in a number of ways, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

So just going to touch on this briefly on the blog, my dad went walk-about and was MIA for four days, and to say that it added to my stress level would be a understatement.. however my dad is perfectly fine, he just didn’t think to tell anyone that he changed his plans and gave a helping hand at a cow camp in the deep dark bush country (no cell phone) helping round up several hundred head..

I will say that I have never been quite aware of the fact that I am NOT ready yet to lose a parent, I would say that no one is ever ready but I know that is not true, I have watched my grandparents fade into “not them” and am aware that a certain point, that passing can be a blessing for both them and the family.

2012-12-24 479 (474x500)

Myself, well I have been dealing with this bruise that is really a wound and darn big one at that, I have been treating it in a number of ways. Its finally starting to settle, I will not say that is healing at this point per say, so much as its stabilized. I am still on half-duty, ok, lets be honest, I am just starting to get back to half-duty today, I have been on.. “it has to be done duty for the past 48 hours with Dh picking up the slack for me”

I will admit that I was so not wanting or ready while feeling like crap, running a steady low grade fever, the overwhelming headache to be dealing with my big 1400 pound cow over the past two days, but thankful just as I am getting stable, she in fact is healing well.

We have allowed her out for brief times from the barn, she can hop, and kick and run around, rub on the big tire, in the dirt, and on the tree’s, visit the pond etc, but overall she has been locked in the barn, I don’t like doing it but if she is not willing to be smart enough to go to the barn from the biting flies, then I will have to do it for her, we have been treating her with salves and I have been keeping the calf on for the full 48 hours both for her healing saliva and to take the milking pressure off me.

I was thrilled to see this morning that she is healing very nicely and has settled back down in her milking because of it for which I am very grateful.

Wishing you all a great weds!

Using fresh herbs to help with bruising..

What does Comfry, Lambs ear, violet greens and plaintain have in common! They are all excellent for swelling, bruising and reducing heat and pain..

This has been the spring of the horsefly, I have never seen them this bad and poor girls teats got bit, she is being treated and we have a number of new  things going on to reduce the population without going with poison to do so.

But she was sore, I had in fact been proactive, having put healing salve on, and tied her leg but I was foolish and didn’t think she would react as badly as she did and so I got kicked..

I don’t mean  a little kick, but neither did she use full strength either, but she came up, around and nailed me above my left knee.. she took my breath and sound, never a good sign on a wound, none the less, I had to finish..

2012-12-24 475 (500x360) (2)

This is just after, never a good thing when you can see bruising with minutes after!

2012-12-24 478 (500x349)

This is 24 hours after, over ten inches long, four plus inches wide and still growing

2012-12-24 477 (500x375)

all wrapped up being treated, its amazing how they draw the swelling and pain out! Collect your fresh leaves, rip them up coarsely, bruising them, add some apple cidar with mother to bring it together, then I placed the mass inbetween soft cotton wound care pads and wrapped it to my leg with self sticking bandage wrap.
