March 20th-house day..

Yesterday was not busy at all, it was just slow an steady and I was in bed early, which didn’t work near as well as I wanted as we ended up at 1:30am for a while.

It was windy and cold, breakfast was omlet, lunch was soup and supper was small meat patties with salad, lots of salad..

Now lets get back to the soup.. this is one of those yummy soups that everyone should know how to make at least a few of them.. Beef Veggie Barley..

2013-01-01 1710 (600x450)

One large onion, one pound of burger, 2 large stocks of celery, 2 large carrots, half a head of cabbage, a can of diced tomato’s and a large can of tomato sauce (spiced) with 12 cups of beef broth and one cup of pearl barley.. yum..  Salt and pepper..

Had to laugh, the lambs were jumping up and down on Brandy while she was resting, and at one point they were playing king of the horse.. so cute, but I didn’t get a good photo..

2013-01-01 1706 (600x507)

The lambs are getting so big already, and are really starting to get into eating their hay, its always so cute to see them with a bit in their mouth, acting like they “know” what they are doing..

2013-01-01 1707 (600x450)

Here is a photo of the photo, this is five days after being let out, and its healing is holding up really well.. I am pleased..

2013-01-01 1708 (600x450)

So I ended up ordering in six new to me kinds of Potato’s to  grow in the garden this year, I have three in storage that are being held from last year’s crop, I hope that with this very slow start to spring that they will hold till planting time. I have ordered in all pinks, all blue’s, Alaska sweetheart (another pink thoughout spud with red skins) and three good canning/winter keeping potato’s.

I have added a number of things since I did the garden list, I guess I had better go back and adjust it at some point, maybe once I get it all planted out 🙂 so I have a final total.

My leeks are going to be ready this weekend to be transplanted into bigger cups, so that is going to take a good amount of time.

March 19th- Cooking Ahead..

Well, the day has dawned dull, grey, cold and windy.. sheez.. everything is frozen, the area’s that had melted are hard slick ice, walking must be done with great care on certain spots on the farm at the moment, and now its snowing, light drifting snow, dancing sideways on the wind..

Still no sap is running, but they say that we will have a few days coming soon that the sap should run, which is good because its hard to make my planned cured meat this month if I can’t get the sap to boil down to use in the cure..

Breakfast was omlet with spinach greens, hot water

Lunch was going to be soup but I forgot that I had a lunch date, opps, its a friend we get together for lunch every two months, I had water, and Beef, veggies and rice for lunch. She pulled it going fast and went, ready! I was like, give me two min! ah… and ran to throw on non-farm cloths, hair in pony tail and go!

Supper is going to be a Beef Barley Tomato veggie soup..

Drinks, water, hot tea with honey, Hubby Hot chocolate..

Need to make a nice big pot of soup to have for quick grab and go’s and for the weekend use if we don’t feel like cooking.. Also need to make bread, I want to gift a friend a loaf this weekend.

My research today has been all about compost trenches for growing celery on.. I have some pretty raw manure/bedding packs that I want to get into production value for this garden season and trenching is a good way to make this happen.

anyone ever done trenching in the gardens that are then grown on that same season? If so, did you lime the bed first? Did you find that it grew well?  Did you find that you needed to water more?

Snacks -FG- Apple, Hubby- Chocolate cake, Peach/orange cake

March 17 – Greens..

Ok, I am going to fess up right now, I sent hubby to the store of dark greens and apples.. Consider them a failure if you want, the rest of the food will continue to come from the house, but I am truly craving greens and apples, and no amount of sprouts, dried greens or dried or canned apple sauce is getting though this.

As I think a lot of you know, I am working really hard to increase my fertility and If this was any normal year I would have been able to shovel off a bit of snow, put a cover over a few area’s and had small fresh dandelion greens, I have no doubt in my mind that if I could get my hands on them, I would be dealing with this better..

If I was in a push come shove, just eating good meals would count more but this year is all about baby making! and it has to come first..

But I am not giving up on the challenge as a whole..

Breakfast, omlet for me, Omlet with toast for hubby

Lunch- Mixed Veggies with cut up leftover meat with a touch of butter

Supper- Pork Chops with a green salad with canned Salsa mixed with a bit of Mayo

I did get out and have some fun with the horse’s today..  here is a photo of them, if you want to see more photos and a little write up, check it out on the horse Blog- Hoola Hoop Fun

Don’t worry, this was one of the more advanced moves and it was a build up from a number of other smaller moves working with them..

The rest of the day has been cold, windy and I am heading to bed early tonight.. That’s it folks.. catch you tomorrow..

March 17th – Happy St. Paddy’s Day..

Breakfast for me was one slice toast with one egg, hubby was omlet, toast with peanut butter. Lunch was leftovers for hubby, fried roast beef with a huge plate of green beans for me.. supper was fresh bannock with roasted guinea fowl breast with bacon, cooked, cooled, diced with fresh green onion, white onion and a touch of mayo with black pepper.

So some of you might remember that I had a sheep with a foot that was damaged about a month ago, she was released from her “recovery” pen this weekend and is doing very well indeed.. I might need to put her back into the barn during the wet melt, as I don’t want that nice tough pad she has grown on her foot to soften and risk infection.

2013-01-01 1683 (600x450)

Its been so cold that the horse’s are getting three to five -five min training sessions daily this past while, yesterday’s one of the little pop outs was to give them granny head wraps in green in honor of St. Paddy’s..

I love the look on their faces.. I will do this, but there had better be a carrot in this for me 🙂

2013-01-01 1690 (450x600)

My last of fresh is starting to show in my body, I can feel myself slowly draining, while I am certainly getting enough calories, and I think if I had been eating my regular winter meals I would not be noticing it so much but because I have been eating so many fruits/veggies daily in regards to fertility, I really feel it on this challenge, I swear if I was allowed, I would eat nothing but salad’s for like three days straight..

March 16th

Sunday came in with lots to do.. we were home on the farm all day, I did go for a visit but it was a walk to the next farm, so that was fine..

We did a little fixin on the very low fencing, certainly a rough job but it raised the fence up a good amount and is better for the sheep, I am sure that the horse’s could still jump it if they wanted to do so.. but at least when you look out, it seems better..

1558457_704105142974976_597141877_n

Breakfast was rye toast with eggs for me, rye toast with peanut butter for hubby, lunch was soup and supper was beets, roast beef and veggie rice, drinks were water, tea or hot chocolate.

Dessert was chocolate coconut pie, hubby had been a hard working man and needed a thank you treat!

Poor wee lamb..

Dh came in the house with a lamb in his arms, at first glance, strong, healthy looking with loud, put me down, give me back to my mom, let me go back to the flock bleeting going on.

Hubby says, I saw him jump the wrong way, and I think he hurt his leg.. can you check it, so I feel the leg and yup, he had indeed hurt it..

2013-01-01 1675 (450x600)

So we measured out his leg, took shims and cut the full end off to fit, it needed to be just past the one joint and for the next three days above the below joint.. I need room for possible swelling but I also need it to be stable.

2013-01-01 1676 (450x600)

Now I need to make both pieces stay where I put them, I cut a nice long (enough to go around and down and back twice, soft cotton and around and around it went..

2013-01-01 1678 (450x600)

Now I needed to make it more tough and ideally pretty waterproof.. duck tape to the rescue again!

2013-01-01 1679 (450x600)

Now it will get checks for temp, swelling and a few other things, its been safely moved into a jug with just its mom, so it can’t be pushed around or bumped by other mothers or be encouraged to play by the other lambs, it need to rest and recover, if needed in three days, I will take it off and adjust and redo it.. I expect it will need the splint for a few weeks to four to six weeks to heal properly..

2013-01-01 1680 (600x450)

It was happy to see mom and nursed right away, its fast for a three legged poor wee lamb.

March 15th-busy… busy..

Breakfast was bacon/eggs, toast with tea and then we were off to the races, dh needed to work on writing out a authers blog interview questions which was his putter of the day, the wind was whipping around, perfect for laundry, and I got six loads done, which means three full lines done over the day.

Sam was laying down, he does trust me enough to come to the fence but no amount of cooing and slow talking would let him stay down while I came to give a pat.. its a start..

2013-01-01 1663 (600x450)

We did regular chores and then we shower and headed off to a “farm” 20 min or so away to look at a new duck, now we laughed when we pulled in, its a castle, four car garage, three stories million plus house and at the back and side thrown up wood and wire/ with plastic is all kinds of birds, ducks and rabbits huh, nice guy, nice critters but totally not what you expect behind that massive o so pretty house..

introducing Gray Mist

2013-01-01 1664 (450x600)

Pat, mist and Blacky were moved as a bredding trio to a new pen just for them so I can control breeding and genes.

The remaining guinea fowl were moved from winter quarters to summer, but not before one of them got a much needed beak trim, only she grows a beak like this, none of the others do

2013-01-01 1665 (600x471)2013-01-01 1666 (600x450)

So that pen will be cleaned out, limed and will have a different summer use.. the geese have been moved into their own breeding trio with a nice big area, and two nesting box’s, one for each girl, instead of building box’s, we put our thinking caps on and recycled two things in storage into nesting box’s for them, and as dirt is frozen, we layered the bottom with 2 inch of loose pig stall compost, with lots of straw bedding, now hopefully they will pick a nest and start laying where I want them to.

Bacon wrapped guinea fowl breast meat is a sweet little treat..

2013-01-01 1659 (584x600)

Supper was steak and potato’s, with a fruit salad, pineapple, canned, dried cranberries and coconut dried, mixed together and allowed to sit together.

Well, had better get this day going!

Hidden Harvest Seedlings Starters

2013-01-01 1660 (600x450)

All the nuts or seeds are from local sourced tree’s, these are Filbert..

2013-01-01 1661 (600x450)

These are shagbark nuts.. The nuts had been kept out in below o temps in a unheated area.. I currently have them in the fridge for another month of cold.

2013-01-01 1662 (600x450)

These are wild Canadian plum pits and Sour Cherry pits, they are in their medium, and I have them wrapped in a wet but not dipping papertowel in a baggy in the fridge, I plan to move them out of the fridge at the end of the month and start working on getting them to crack open and root..  Do you have anything in your fridge that you are hoping to start as seedlings this spring?
