That is the third time this morning on the radio..

That they are talking about the rising costs of food across the globe and the effects its having in regards to some of the riots we are seeing, they are qouting the fact that for the past seven months that we have seen increase’ if you want to read more details, check out this article

I am interested to see how soon some of those costs will also show up in my critter feed costs? I know last year was the first time in six years that wheat was growing in the different farms around us, and I noted that to a few of the different folks in passing, and they all said the same thing.. Wheat was a “up” crop last year.. it replaced a great deal of the fields around here of soybean.. want to bet that you see that trend stay in place this coming year?

So are you seeing a increase in your area for the basics? Are you planning on gardening this year to help reduce your costs? or perhaps increase your gardens in size? Are you finding your food budget not going as far as before? If so, care to share what you are in fact cutting out, or are you spending more to maintain your current level? and if so, got an idea of how much? 5%, 10% or more?

For myself, I am seeing it, the big one that I notice is flour, sugar, rice and oatmeal.. I am also really seeing the rising costs in the fresh food department, driving me more towards my own home canning and frozen fruits and veggies.

The cost of frozen veggies is one thing I have really noticed this winter, the prices around here at least are not good on this product, the most reasonable bags are 2 kg so 4.4 pds worth of veggies and they are running right around 5 dollars plus tax, which means over 2 dollars per pds, when last year, I could get the same bags on sale for less then a dollar per pound, they have not gone on sale at all this year, and these are not top of the line-these are the store brands, hit green giant and you are looking at over 3 dollars per pd..

    What I find terrifying is the number of people who seem not to notice a change. They go and buy sugar for $3/2kg and say “Isn’t that the usual price?”

    The biggest change I’ve noticed is, actually, sugar. Shopping in bulk at a warehouse store insulates us against some of the price increases. I looked at the price of flour at Sobeys the other day and it seems like 10 kg is over $15, but we just paid $12.49 for 20 kg. I’m concerned that it’s going to go up there, too, but I really don’t have the ability to store more than 20 kg.

    Funny, we were talking about this very thing yesterday with a young couple in town trying to start up a coffee shop with home baking. In our Co-op, sugar, flour,and milk have risen dramatically.I suggested to her to buy skim milk powder and buttermilk powder and use that instead of fresh,try to buy wholesale eggs from the hutterites instead of through the stores and to watch the flyers and shop for the best prices even if you drive a bit and stockup. When my children were small I had three new large green garbage cans and when on sale, they would be filled with flour, sugar and oatmeal and a board that fit over top and a nice small rug and the hats and mittens were on top and it was just part of my porch til bake day and then they were opened up.It often took me eight months to use up the oats but I never had a bug ever.Flour will last a long time and sugar , longer than we live.I think we need to once again use the nooks and crannies of our homes for storing,under beds,backs of closets,an extra shelf put in the top of closets and cupboards,mom

    • I remember those, where were you buying those things in bulk,? I also remember the big bags of pea’s and shelling them for what seemed like forever on the deck, and B.C. fruit runs by Grandma and Grandpa, but I think the thing I remember the most was the canning, boy did we can on the farm.. row after row of canning, thousands of jars worth..

      Yes, I do agree, its amazing the different places you can find nooks and crannies to store supplies and extra cases of this or that..

      Wonder where I got that training and ability to store lots of food when you can afford to, so that if or “when” times are leaner that you have it if you need it
