Healing Salves-Yeast or Heat Skin Rash Blend.

Ok, so let me do the little blub first.. this is advice only, try a small amount yourself to make sure you don’t have a reaction and if anything gets worse etc discontinue use..

Now on with the show.. its spring, we are busy, its getting hotter and this means that at least for me, I am starting to deal with that wet, hot, painful rash that can appear where skin meets skin. Now in flat out terms this is happening because my skin rests on my skin and it allows yeast to grow and its a pain to be sure..

Its also something that is very, very hard to “cure” because the very suitable growth medium is done over and over again daily, the doctors will write you a cream for this and it does work, my mom uses it at the first hints of red and treats faithfully.

The internet will tell you things like use over the counter fungi treatments, but have you read the backs on those, if it was treat once and be done, I can see if being worth it, but given that even the doctors will admit that its a treat as needed, going to be a issue.. I think not..

Then there are those that use baby powder, keep it dry and it will help, and it does, its a great idea for those that have minor issues with this, average size person that only needs to treat because of pinched cloths or the odd spot.. There are warnings out there now in regards to using to much babypowder (scented more then non-scented) but given that babypowder is made from corn starch and that the corn being used is the GMO corn, I has certainly given me pause on that one..  ( If you can find non-GMO babypowder? please share the link with me?!)

Which brings me to the last way I know folks deal with it, which is the hand cleaner or any other rubbing achohol, and you will be doing the dance and hiss of pain after putting these on! it does help, in the short term, it helps dry the area out, it helps knock down yeast to a point, but it does not help the redness, the soreness or the swelling. And now in many countries in Europe, they are banning different chemicals used in those hand cleaners used in N.A. for having possible cancer causing issues.

So that brings me to this homemade salve..

Healing Salve 1

  • Plaintain – Fresh picked twenty to twenty five average spring size leaves with stems.
  • half a cup of nettle leaves (no stems)
  • 1 full cup of wild violets mix of leaves with flowers

Bring in the house, clean them, wash them in truly needed otherwise, don’t.. Roll them into bundles and chop them and then bruise them with the back of the knife or rolling pin if you don’t know how to use the knife correctly for that..

Into a steel pot or even better a double boiler, just cover with the best quality oil olive you own, low, low, LOW heat, gentle warm and allow to steep.. ideally at least an hour or two..

Add in 4 tbsp. of coconut oil and 1 oz of raw beeswax, allow to melt into the mix.. strain and jar the mix into small canning jars, put your lid on and allow to cool.

You can add to the mix while hot if you want to, example a few drops of tea tree oil per jar and mix with a clean dry spoon. This is a hot method of making this salve, you can do the same salve with the cold process but you will need to dry your fresh plants and then allow them to soak in the oils for four to six weeks in a cool dark dry place before straining them and making the rest of the salve.

2012-12-24 169 (500x375)

You can make your salves like a massage oil, just leave out the coconut oil and beeswax or you can make it firmer by adding in a tiny bit more beeswax, or you can make it melt at body heat temp, remove the beeswax and it will still be firmer with the coconut oil at room temp but will melt right in from the room temp..

2012-12-24 170 (500x375)

Mine is a meet in the middle, its firmer but still easy to get out and will start to melt on the skin and is easy to apply. The perk of this salve is that it helps treat the infection, it helps with the pain, and the inflammation, and it is soothing and at least for me, helps remove the pain within the first use.. it does require regular treatments but no more so then the doctor’s treatment, and because its so lovely, It can be used as a lotion as well as a preventive once you have it cleared up.

Ideally, you should only make enough for a 3 month supply but I have had the salves last at least six months at a time. I recommend putting the different plants into the list to be dryed and therefor you can make this salve fresh even when its winter time, the fresh made is excellent, the dried is very good.. both will get the job done..

Wild Violets vs Growing Wild Violets in the garden..

So while I adore hanging out on the ground with my hubby wild crafting, in this case Wild Violets (recipe and what I am doing with them coming in future posts)

2012-12-24 156 (500x375)

I could not help but feel the need to share the difference between the food forest meadow violets and the garden violets.

2012-12-24 163 (500x375)

The really important thing to remember is that the garden violets were the same size as the wild violets when I moved them from the wild to the garden five years ago.

2012-12-24 149 (500x375)

I am going to be moving more of the wild ones into the garden if for nothing else ease of picking and the fact that I really enjoy them in the garden as does the bee’s.

2012-12-24 162 (500x375)

For the ability to harvest and use, clearly having a dozen or two of the ones in the garden is going to make your life a lot easier then wading though the pastures for the tiny, tiny ones, the only reason they are as open and easy to find this year, is because I have allowed the horse to be the lawn mower, which has increased the sun available to the wild strawberries, the dandelions and the wild violets.

A Forage Spring Greens Burger Recipe

This recipe is very flexable, you can really mix up the greens to suit what is happening in your garden or on  your forage walks.

Spring Greens Burger Recipe..

  • One pd of grass-fed pasture raised beef- 0 mile
  • 2 fresh eggs- Pastured eggs- o mile
  • 2 cups of finely diced greens- Mine was a mix of stinging nettles, horseradish leaves, Danelion baby greens, fresh spring garlic greens, green onions and chives.
  • Half a cup of leftover homemade pasta sauce (or tomato sauce)
  • Salt, Pepper, Seasoning salt,  Worchester sauce to taste
  • This will give you a very firm filling burger, if you want lighter, consider adding bread crumbs or oatmeal.

2012-12-24 125 (500x375)

Mix very well, now you have a couple choices, you can make meatballs, or you can make burgers and grill then or make burgers and bake them or you can turn this into a awesome meatloaf..

2012-12-24 126 (500x375)

In my case, as I wanted something that could be eaten as a cold supper on a hot day, I baked mine off..

To serve, I went and cut a huge handful of fresh horseradish greens, destemmed them, cooked with till Just wilted in a touch of butter, and then mixed them with mayo, with a touch of seasoning salt which was our burger topping, and it was delightful!

Sekanjabin Farmgal version #3

I have written about this amazing drink before and I can’t tell you just how awesome it is when it come on a hot summer day.. I have tried to make it with dried herbs and at least for me, it needs to be made with fresh picked from the garden, making this a very special drink that is really good only for the spring summer and early fall months..

Sometimes having some thing only be really good for half the year just makes you crave it even more.. its a sweet/sour mint drink, I have learn to lower the sugar content, increase the herb content, and play around with the vinagers..

Here is my current spring version (while my apple mints are coming up, compared to the nettles, they are just starting) so you use what you have.

Most Basic Version possible.

  • 2 cups of washed picked fresh nettle leaves
  • 1 cup to 2 cups of sugar (can use half the honey but it effects the flavour)
  • 1/2 cup of white wine vinager.
  • 4 cups of water

Put your freshly picked nettles into pot, cover with cold water, add sugar and vinagers and simmer for 20 min, strain and cool/fridge.. the portions are 1/3rd of this mix to 2/3 rds cold water for the tea itself..

Note, I have tried apple cider vinager as well but I find for that one as least I like the white wine one better..

Nettle and Mint

This is by far a more popular version and I have two taste tasters try it and they both really liked it.. its a fuller flavour to me then the nettle only version.

Make it one cup of nettles and one cup of fresh picked apple mint.. I have used both white wine and apples vinager and both are excellent in this one..

2012-12-24 132 (375x500)

Nettle, Mint and Wild Violets Flowers

  • 1 cup of nettles
  • 1 cup of apple mint
  • 1/2 a cup of freshly picked violets

Follow the directions above but do try this version with red wine vinager for a interesting twist..

For the mints, do give them a large chop up and a good bruise just before adding them to the pot for the simmer..

Waiting..Waiting…Waiting….

For the calf to be born..

Things have been slowly but steady on the Girl front, as the rains came in last night, she was moved to her big birthing pen with one half bedded down and the other her eating, drinking and bathroom area’s. Despite lack of sleep thoughtout the night, its clear that she is moving along on her birthing, each time spent with her watching and checking, I could clearly see the next stages, the last time I was in checking, less then 30 min ago, we for the first time had side laying, this is great, as that is the proper typical position that she should be in for delivery, and she has moved over to small groans when the contracts hit.. she has also gone into the stage of up and down and sniff and smell her leaking fluids..

Its just a matter of time and as she is very focused, calm and almost zen like, I am just following her lead on this..

For Brandy to trust me enough to stay laying down when I come up to her…

Brandy trusts me enough to roll when on lead or off lead right by me, she will go down and roll, but she is still not willing to let me walk those final four or six feet and pet her while she is relaxed and down on the ground.. this morning I really wish she would.. she was laying sleeping and she stretch out and lifted her head in greeting, (thinking I was heading to the barn yet again) and I though, good time to give a hello and I thought for sure this time she would let me do it, but nope at the very last second she sat up and then stood up to greet me..

For any hen, be it chicken, fowl or guniea to do broody.. (other then the turkey hen)

the only female birds on this farm that don’t have a mate, is the turkey hen and she is the only one faithfully sitting on a nest of eggs.. get it together girls, I want little ones!

For the seeds to sprout in the main garden..

Ok, I have seeds out there that are coming on two weeks to one week in and its been warm, and I have been faithful in my watering, I want to see you poking your little heads up and out of the ground already! Get with it LOL

For the rains to come.. Gentle wonderful rain last night, no need at all to water the gardens this morning but is a wonderful morning of sunshine, filled with the sounds of a number of singing birds, with blue sky all the way around.. we could honestly use the couple days of rain they said was coming our way.. so bring on the rain..

What are you waiting for today?

Got Milk, Girl does..

Got Milk, Girl does.. I was doing my check, afternoon feeding and as she was up this time, I did my touch, check, her bag is even bigger and fuller then before, and I did my regular teat milk motion(its a practise thing I have been doing since she was a young calf) and out comes milk on the first try.. I stopped right there, and gently touched the other three teats and didn’t milk them..

So if she has milk, how far can the calf be behind

At this point, I will take dibs on when this calf is coming!
