March 9th- A bit of fresh..

I awoke with energy and well rested, breakfast was egg, onion and some canned mushrooms, with spices, it was yummy, Dh added in two toast with raspberry jam, I had apple cider vinegar/honey tea and hubby had hot chocolate.

Don’t the sprouts look wonderful, sweet, crunchy and fresh!

The morning was all about work, work and more work with the horse’s  and the house, we shoveled out a pathway to my one big clothes line, I want to be able to start hanging more things out now a day’s, still will need to dry hubbies work cloths and my good cloths, but the rest of the house stuff, the critter bedding etc can all be line dried, it will save me another 50 plus to slow down using the dryer.

Lunch was the leftover stirfry, I put about two to three cups of light white broth into a pot, added in the leftover stirfry and then about a cup of whole milk, and heated it up till just simmering, then I thickened it with cornstarch.. and it was our lunch, yum..

The afternoon passed in a blur of warm sunshine, laundry, housework and farm work, we are working to pull back another inch or two of bedding/manure off the fence line by the feeder area, each pull back creates a pile, each pile gets loaded into the sled and hauled to a garden area, and dumped, each day that sun warms the area just enough that we can pull off another inch or so down the line.. we really need to do this because between the snow and the bedding/manure pack that poor fence is getting lower and lower, this will help the fence come back up in size, and its a good workout each day to get one more pile done and moved for garden use.

Supper is planned, we are having herbed and parm breaded steak with rice and purple cabbage salad.

Dessert is some canned peaches in their lovely juice.. Life is good.. Now if I could just climb over the eight to ten plus foot banks of snow to get in to look at getting some taps, but given its still so cold, I don’t think I am missing my run yet but I do want to get to it this week, is the sap running in your area yet or are you on “ice” like I am?

March 8th- Busy Day..

We really didn’t get to sleep in today, we need to go pick up a feed order, we wanted to get to the church basement second hand shop, found a awesome warm soft blanket for the hounds, and a lovely double flannel sheet set, I have plans for it, it will be a coming post for sure, four lovely new cobalt blue, three big coffee cups or soup/stew cups, a new (to us) pair of black jeans for hubby and two quart canning jars and one new bit water jug, as my regular one has decided that it wants to leak , it can be used in a number of ways still but not tipped and drank from..  Grand total of 6.50, Wish they had more jars at 25 cents each, I would snap up a few more hundred to be sure.

Then we needed to go the store, yup, I bought ten pounds worth of carrots, I am not cheating on this one, they are for horse training treats.

Breakfast was Toasted bread with roast beef on it for me, and Peanut butter for hubby, Lunch was two porgies each and leftover soup, Supper was a lovely stirfry, with a full pint of my sprouted mung beans, leaving me with half a quart jar for use tomorrow, don’t you love that half a cup of dried beans can turn into a quart full of lovely yummy fresh food just before your own eyes!

Got a visit with friend in the early afternoon, along with some work on the farm done, and then headed out for a late afternoon ride, it was good in some ways and challenging in others, but overall everyone arrived safe and sound back home and tomorrow is new day.

This evening, I think I am going to take my hubby on head to head on Sod Busters a board game and see who can homestead better out in the wild west 🙂

March 7th-March Challange

Breakfast was Dippy eggs and toast, more egg then toast.. lunch was a huge roast beef sandwhich with mustard and I was missing having anything fresh to go on it. I wanted greens, cheese, tomato or peppers.. I stared at my sandwhich, and frowned.

Then I made a itty bitty cabbage salad and put it on my sandwhich, not bad, not bad at all..

Then hubby wanted porgies for supper, and I said, sure no problem (thinking we had a bag in the freezer) opps, nope, so homemade it was.. I don’t normally make homemade porgies, so they turned out huge but tasty..

Three was enough for a full meal, I made them with mashed spuds, steak, garlic and soft sheep milk cheese.

I think I might have overdid the workouts yesterday, I did a knee strengthing one in the morning, then I did a horse training session, then I did extra outside chores, and ended up taking a walk and breaking snow.. I was done right after supper, crash! a bit sore on Saturday morning, but stetching will work it out, I am so riding both days of the weekend!

March 6th – Just moving right along..

Well, I can’t say that the day was a bad one, breakfast was eggs and a bit of beef bacon. Lunch was soup, and supper was a slice of fresh bread, with fresh hot sliced beef for me, and soup for DH, Dessert was a apple spice cake, drinks were water, and tea with honey or apple cider vinager with honey.

2013-01-01 1603 (450x600)

The soup was super yummy but easy to make, I put a pat of coconut oil in the bottom of my pan, one large onion diced, one pound of burger, cooked till done, then I added in a quart of bone broth, one large can of mixed beans, one large can of mushrooms, included the juice from both the beans an the mushrooms to the soup, salt, pepper to taste.

I was active for the day, which was nice, in and out on the farm, took a little walk, groomed some hounds, groomed the horse’s,

Baked a oatmeal, buckwheat, molasses, egg and sheep milk bread for hubby’s toast in the mornings. It turned out quite well.. nice crumb, yummy taste.

The moral of the story in a “once upon a time”

Once upon a time on a little homestead there was a farmer, she had a mix of critters, she had a milk goat, she had chickens and ducks, she had lovely flock of sheep and she had pasture pigs.

The farmer was blessed, and she knew that full size or a piggy pack of piglets while it was great to let them roam around, she was one of “those” farmers, the ones that are old fashioned and let the pigs roam around the pastures, dig in mud holes and be a pig..

The farmer knew that when it came time for babies to be born that Grandpa had always said, lock up your pigs, because if they are allowed near a birthing momma, they will eat the baby and maybe even the mom if they get the chance..

It was a grandpa story, one of those pearls of wisdom passed down with little to no proof to go with it, but the farmer knew that it was always better to be safe then sorry.

So when it came time for the sheep to have their wee lambs, the pigs were moved from the one part of the barn with access to a big pen for those few weeks.

But what the farmer didn’t “see” was that in that pen, there was slots that the wee babies could walk though, only big enough for a momma sheep to get her head though, not big enough for more then a piggy snout really.

The sheep flock liked the area by the pig pen, they were friends after all, it was a big run in with shelter from the wind on three sides but the sheep could lay in the warm sun, chew cud and let the lambs play..

The farmer called the sheep to come to do a head check, and a ewe came but her lamb was missing, the momma sheep was calling but no answer came, the farmer said.. did you lose your lamb, where did you leave it sleeping? The farmer started looking.. at the hay manger, in this stall or that stall, then the farmer remembered that they like to sleep in the lean to, and around to it did the farmer go..

Much to the farmers horror, what had happened was clear, the wee lamb had gone though the slot and the big pig had killed and was just about finished eating it, after the farmer stood stunned, and then (maybe just maybe the farmer threw up a little) tears ran down the farmers face at making such a mistake.

The farmer called all the sheep and lambs into the front of the barn and locked them up, and then the farmer put up new boards all along that pen. so that it would never ever happen again.

“the moral of the story, love your pasture pigs but don’t trust them around your baby livestock”

Homemade Pizza- Steak, Mushrooms and Onion.

2013-01-01 1541 (600x450)

The base of this Pizza was a sheep milk fluffy dough, put it was placed on a well greased huge cookie sheet, it was hand pulled and it was pulled thin, a touch thinner on one side for the edges for Dh and thicker puffer for me, who ideally loves a rich thick crust but sometimes you need to do things for your man, and he likes a thin crust..

2013-01-01 1539 (600x450)

This pizza was not one of my easy throw it all on there and cook it.. it was in fact a fussy thing.. I need to cut and cook the meat in little bites, cooked in garlic, and the mushrooms and I wanted to cook the onion down to sweet bites of heaven.. Baked with a mix of white and dark sharp chedder in a hot oven of 400.

March 5th- Sunny Day..

Breakfast was the normal, eggs and flat bread, with tea an honey.

Dear Hubby is working from home today, and guess what we are doing for his lunch hour, yup, we are going horseback riding!, now that is a good way to spend a bit of time together on this fine sunny winter day!

2013-01-01 1592 (450x600)

A great way to wake me up and get me moving.. and the horse’s were more then ready to have a little time off the farm as well 🙂

2013-01-01 1590 (450x600)

We came in and heated up a lovely tomato burger corn soup for lunch with water, I have pulled a roast, some burger and a steak to thaw, so I will have a good choice of things for supper time when it rolls around..

Yup, I think I am coming down with something, went for a hours nap and Dh woke me up for a late supper a number of hour’s later, he says, that he talked to me and I answered but I think he was pulling my leg, cuz I don’t remember it 🙂 I never even moved LOL,

Dh made steak, carrots and mashed garlic potato’s, Rooboo tea with honey and Applesauce for dessert.

Slowly working our way though the fresh stuff but keeping at least 80 percent of all the meals from the farm (eggs) and from the pantry and trying to limit the fresh to about 20 percent to help it stretch further, my bean sprouts all have tails and tomorrow, I will be starting a new jar. I have also started a micro greens tray with radish and with broccoli for coming future use.
