Question from Reader.. Goat Stepped on nail?

Hi, there my goat stepped on a nail in the back of her hoof between when the leg
ends and the hoof starts. Bout an inch in, she can’t put much weight on it
today, it happened yesterday. I’ve been soaking it in warm salt water. If it
doesnt get better tommorrow should i get a shot for her? she’s my best goat, and
i can’t afford the vet right now.

-Well, if she just stepped on the nail yesterday, she is not going to be better within a day, it takes days and weeks to properly heal a nail wound.

Given that my first advice if you are unsure about things to to recommend you have your vet in, you kinda took that out of the the field with the, can’t afford the vet right now..

So that makes me ask, how about the goats breeder? Is she local, does she have a good amount of years experance with her goats, could she come over and give you a hand flushing the wound, checking it and help you figure out what if anything she would recommend for a antibodic.

If not the goat breeder, how about the farmer that lives down the way that has been treating his critters for years and has very healthy animals, might he come and have a look?

Soaking it in warm salt water is a great start, have your flushed the wound itself? How does it look, does it appear to be healing on its own with the soaks, have you made sure that the goat is in a very! clean stall with clean dry bedding, and has a goat friend in with her, she should not have to go far to get food/water, nor should she be in the herd, as the others will take advantage of her injury and push her around, but being put alone will stress a herd animal as well, so you are better off giving her either a offspring, or a lower ranked herd member that she is friends with.

Check your goat heath book and see what it says in regards to treatment, I have had goats and they tend to get into things, I had one that hurt her foot and I didn’t give antibodics for it, just care and soaks and she recovered well, with a larger heavier critter like  the cow, the books said that most of the time, they will get an infection and so I was pro-active on it.

You will need to keep an eye on all her basic health signs, feed, water, manure, temp and just how she feels, is she normal and active with bright eyes but just favouring her foot, or is she dull, hot and off her feed..

If she is looking good in all ways, eating well, bright eyed and active other then favoring her foot and you are faithfully keep the bedding, clean and dry and soaking her foot, the odds are greatly in her favour that she will recover just fine.

If she get a fever, goes off feed or does not look like she is feeling well, get help in fuguring out what medication you need to give. Hope that helps a little..

Weekend this and that post

Wow, its hot out this weekend, the last week of baking aug heat, and its humid to boot, the sweat runs freely just from being, let alone working.. Still having said that its a perfect weekend for being home on the farm.

We got up at 5 and did the dogs as per normal but then growled at them to go back to sleep and was abe to sleep in almost to eight, puttering start to the morning, and then just started doing the checks, Tooties was very brave this morning and was waiting by her water bowl and was looking forward to her breakfast.

Brandy was out in the small pasture grazing and came when she heard my voice to wait for me  at the hay feeder and water spot, tried a new grooming tool on her this morning , its Girl the cows favorite but not Brandy’s, works great on her mane and tail though but she finds it to sharp for her hide, at least in summer coat, think she would love it in winter or in shed out in spring.

We did some lunge lining and you have to work at keeping her at the slower paces, she want’s to either trot or canter, and because I am not working on a proper line (I will get one today) I have control but not the light line weight I want, still I was able to give her much better range.

My sweetheart is so out of shape, but she’s game! I figure it would be a good idea to get her in much better shape before asking her to also carry my weight on rides to boot.. I stopped her while she was still ready to go, but had broke sweat in a few places..

After some fussing and a little braiding in a mane, we let the cows out and groomed girl, who is still not getting taller but I swear she is getting wider, she is never going to be a very big cow, but that’s just fine with me, she is perfect just the way she is..Marty looks so small when he is beside her but in truth he is growing like a weed as well.

As we are going to be out and about, we let all the birds out for some free time, where we have been taking things to them as the fox was getting way! to bold and while free range is great, you have to make sure your critters are safe.

Its a garden morning, my fall planted out garden is growing rapidly and I could not be more pleased, we have things coming from the garden but its still a much reduced harvest this year but it really depends on what we are looking at or talking about..

Looks like I am going to get a excellent potato crop, a grape crop, elderberry, a good corn and bean and root veggies crop, a poor winter squash, tomato crop.. thank goodness for living in an area that you can get a three season harvest.

Miss Bright eyes the turtle is doing well, I got a book on turtle care an she now as a few extra’s to call her own, like a floating lily pad, a floating cutle board to make sure she has enough calcuim for proper shell growth, and I picked up special food for her age, but mainly I just let her little pond provide her food, and give her a worm once a week, which she loves!

Did you plant a fall garden? and if so, how is it going?

Horsing Around-Shall we dance?

O Friday, what a crazy busy day you were, ups and down and arounds.. my typical o so quiet fridays was filled with horses, visiting and meeting new folks..

Goals for the day- Tack up and small short ride..

– Lunging

Well, she needed to wait her turn in the training today as work was being done with a different horse for a good bit of the morning, This was very useful for me in two ways, first I got to watch and that is a refresher course on reading body lang and watching my current horse mentor working with and training her horse, we both are going to the same end goal but there are differences in how we are getting there.. so being able to step back and watch allows me to see and learn her cues, her training commands and allows me to afterwards to ask her to explain what she means by this word or that word and translate it into my own known horse lang

Just two quick examples:

She said, the head down, for a in just being broke horse who bucked, translated into my lang, it was a hard buck, what we both meant was that the horse didn’t raise its head up, there was no give on the buck, she wanted that saddle of her back.. Just so you know, her session ended on a nice high note, with a great ear massage and a much relaxed horse that was giving her trust at that point.

A second example is we time our moving Clicks different and our go words are different and already having ground worked with Brandy for a few days, she is already looking for my commands, T’s is click yup, and mine is “walk on click”

So Brandy was tacked up, and lead around, then T got up on her for me and I lead her around, then we took off the lead rope and she had a soft and short ride, she moves well, she backed, and she goes right with ease, she is harder on the left turn.

That was all I wanted to do and we got her off and cooled off and brushed down, picked up her feet..

Last night after supper, we took a walk and then we did some stretch movements and command work, groomed, ears and tails etc..

Then I tried starting her on lunging and was playing with sounds, when suddenly she started to respond correctly, I got her into the big pasture and gave her all the rope I had at that time and O My!! she knows how to lunge, we did a nice warm up slow, med and fast walk in both directions and then we went to town, one big circle was down from slow walk to fast walk to trot, to canter and back down again..

My big baby is so out of shape, she broke a sweat doing her routine but to be fair, so did I, she was just so beautiful in that soft gentle canter! and when she is not walking double slow to try and match me, she really covers ground in her own natural walking pace.

After I turned her lose, she came over and asked for a hug, not just a pat, not just little snuggle, she was comfortable with me giving her a full body contact big hug, that’s a first as well..

Saturday has arrived and I will write tomorrow, but the goals are bringing out a 20 foot and or a 30 foot lunge line for one training, a walk with command ground work for the second and drive lines for her third.. I am trying to do three training seasons of no less then 20 min and no more then 40 min

Hanging out with Farmgal!

Posted in Life moves on daily | 6 Comments

Horsing Around- Lets hang in two ways! -Day 2

Goal of the day: Hanging out in the pasture and hanging off of her!

So picked her up this morning, first thing was that she was way back in the tree’s, she has 20 acres, so it took about five min of calling before I heard her coming up the trail and she got her carrot this morning, and after we got her on the main trial, I took a side trail with her in the bush and then brought her over to my farm. We did the regular (I’m not going to write it out each time, regular means, groomed, sprayed for the bugs, feet checked )

And then out to the pasture we went, this time my first goal was quite different, it was not to spend time walking with her or even really interacting with her, unless she choose to make that happen, I took my chair, my book and walked with her following to the shade of one of the big pasture tree’s and plunked myself down, there is good grazing to had there and that is just what she settled down to do..  about every 15 min or so, I would look up, smile, call her like I will if she is in the pasture which has been decided on as “Hey!! Brandy Girl!” and she would look up, come over, get a small apple and a pat and good girl and then back to my book I went, and back to grazing she went..  I wanted to see how far she would go and I had planned on when she got to 20 feet today (will work up to 30) feet to call her back and have her check in with me..

The purpose of this game is that as a trail horse, she needs to learn that just because I am off her and not working with her, does not mean that she should not stick around, yes, feel free to graze, yes, you are “loose” but I might need you at any time, so keep an eye on me.

This was an amazing success! She never left the 15 foot mark, she just grazed around me the whole time, and she responded with interest and was content.

Now I have come into the house, but on the hour, I head back out with a small apple and call her to where the hay feeder and the water bucket is, and when she comes from down by the barn up to there, she gets a handful of fresh greens, a apple and some love.. I want her to know I have not forgotten that she is there, and to continue the calling come to me training!

This afternoons training is quite different, I am heavy (as in well over 200 pds overweight, even with my weight loss to date over the so called perfect ideal weight, but for my own goals, I am still 130 pds over where I want to be) and that means that getting up on a horse is a issue, I need help, so my goal is to start teaching Brandy three things

a)to learn to walk up close to where I am going to mount, and that could be anything, a step, a ditch, a tree log etc.. Anything that will give me a leg up! So today I am using my big cement topped cistern down back by the Big Barn in the small Pasture, its a perfect first learning tool, as its easy to walk up on the long sides, but has the shorter sides for more challange

b) she needs to learn to stand perfectly still for me pressed up beside the mounting aid

So the work means leading her up and getting her to stand while I lay over her back and just hang my weight on her.. sounds simple but its really alot of baby steps to get it to work perfectly..

Dh had already built me a hitching post at the big barn for when I was working with girl, so that was a blessing.

While she is easy enough to lead up to the mounting block, she does not like to swing her rear in, this required me, getting off the block, pushing her rear in, keeping her in a stand, and then getting back up and then hanging over her back.. No issues at about laying over her..

So we got off and instead of working on the block itself, we did different commands on the ground, whoa, stands, backs, walk arounds and then I used the fence to walk her up into the same postion and then used over to get her back end to swing in. Ended with me walking her over into the back of the barn to show her the lean to area..

Thanks it for the day, other then checks and pats, that is more then enough for her to get her horse head around and its coming on the heat of the day, I want her to rest, graze and just hang out getting use to the sheep/cows.  I might do one more small 10 or 20 min something this evening with her.. but it will just be a repeat of this afternoon but with a different mounting block etc.

Goals of the day:  Stay with me- Success

: Mounting Block- working Progress

: Standing Still- Success, she understands what Stand means..

Horsing Around -Do you want to play with me?- Day 1

Goal of the day: Does she want to spend time with me

Well, for those that are don’t like horses, my advice is that when a Horsing Around Post shows up, just hit delete 🙂 for the rest , enjoy learning and hearing how it goes as I do..

So today we headed over to my pasture, and once we were safely in the big pasture, I unhooked Brandy and let her go, now I will admit here that if she had not already proven that she was a easy catch horse, I might have gone with a extra long lead instead but given that she had meet us at the gate when we went to see her and meet me at the gate that morning, I was not to worried about not being able to catch her.

No, what I wanted to see was if she wanted to be with me, did she want to spend time with me or would she perfer to be at the other end of the pasture, how was she with gates, how was she going to be around me if she didn’t have the lead to help provide control.

Now, while I will flat out say, I am so flipp’n rusty when it comes to reading horse body lang, some things are easy enough to do so, but I need to relearn not just the basic’s but more important, I need to learn my horse.

So off she goes, and the first thing I learn is that she likes to play, I got head bob’s, neck twists, mini rear ups, and she stetched out and went from walk to trot to canter down and back and over in the pasture. She moves easily between the three gaits and I was able to watch her shift between them with ease.

She was making wide cicles around me, then taking off to the far part of the pasture to talk to the horses she could still hear but not see, which was fair enough, but then she would circle back and check in with me..  The first time she came at me in a full trot, I stood and she slowed and stopped in front for a head pat..

Then I started walking about and she played follow the leader , then I started taking her to the different paddocks and smaller pasture, at the gates, she was told to Whoa, which she did, told to Stand, and only after I crossed the gate, and clucked with a walk on, did she cross the gate, and again in each new space, she would go off exploring it, but within a loop or two, she would swing back and check in with me.. I was walking to the far back corner of the small pasture and she swung around the big shade tree and came into a hard canter straight at me, she was clearly in high spirits but there didn’t appear to be any intent, I stood my ground, while admitting that I had better be prepared to move left fast if I needed to.. at about 15 feet away, you could see her collect herself and by 6 to 8 feeet she moved into a trot, and by the time she reached me, it was a dead stop just to the right of me, and then tucked her head down for a pat.

I also groomed her and we played the back game a couple times in a different places, her first back, she gave me a foot or two, but by the end of our last back game, she gave me five or six feet. She understands forward, back, right and left turning, but to date so far, I don’t see any real showing of over or flexabity of being able to turn her head in without the rest of her body following the swing.

When I started my time with her, I had touched her all over and she was good but didn’t trust me enough to give me her tail but by the end of the day just before I put her away, I was touching and leaning on her, and when I went for her tail, she gave it to me and let me pull it out and over her flank..

What she learned: I like her and I want to spend time with her, I don’t want to hurt her and I come with pats, happy voice, and treats!

What I learned: She is good about being touched, she needs to have a refresher course in personal space, but she likes me too, and she does not appear to have a mean bone in her body on a normal natural day.

Goal of the day: Does she want to spend time with me – Success!

Health Update

Wow, a week has flown by, and so much has happened in that time frame..

So first thing, I am quitting the gym.. I need to know when to cut my losses, and this is one of them, I am not going to get off the farm and to town X amount of times a day, the farm has so many things that need to be done, and the cost of the gym will buy a full round bale for my new horse plus her feed for the month..

The horse is the new gym LOL, and what a great workout she has been this week already..

So on the eating front, we had one moment of weakness and I paid for it for days later, Dh was on holiday’s for a long weekend and we had a blast!, we had a list of projects that needed to be done on the farm and we had a list of things to do off the farm, so it was a sleep in, have a fancy weekend breakfast, and then hurry! get that thing on the chore list done, and boot off the farm.. not everything we did cost money or at least not to much of it, like wild apple picking or exploring our locally area in regards to wild forage things, or picture taking, but we also got out to the show, and to a local cheese festival and to a sunday get together.

So in the middle of all our travel a bag of crunchy junk was got, and while it didn’t have wheat in it, it was made of corn, none the less.. it tasted great going down but wow, did I not! feel good about it later, its so off the list!

Otherwise, we are right on track with our meals, I find we are eating less in portion sizes while still getting the correct calories, its still hard sometimes because you just want to have something quick to make and unless you prepare things ahead of time, that is hard to come by, the quick thing for me is my orginal V8 juice heated up and used as a tomato soup.

So would it be any real suprise that when I did my weight in this morning, that yes, I am once again down in weight! I love seeing that scale going down! I have had no issues with my blood pressure this week either, and my energy level is good but boy when I sleep, do I ever sleep, going to bed early these days and sleeping a bit late in the mornings, well for me, I normally get up and going between five and six and a couple days have been more like seven or eight..

O and as I was in the city, I hit the bulk store and picked up a few flours I am allowed to have, don’t care for the arrowroot but it will work for making gravy but the coconut flour does work well in everything I have tried it with and so much cheaper then the ground almond flour, also was able to get some coconut oil on sale.

Went for my second massage which I have started working with my bonecracking treatments, and while the first one made me a little scared to go back, turns out I have alot of scare tissue in my hips area, and wow did it hurt the first time and then we worked on shoulders and neck area, well it hurt for days afterwards, was not sure I wanted to go back again or not but did and was so glad I did, there was a clear improvement in reduction of pain in the area’s being worked and she was able to go deeper and I had little to no pain the next day, but increased flexability with my stretches! Given the cost, I don’t think it will ever go more then once a month but if it continues to be of value, I will stay with it.

This week is simple, eat well, get my eight hours of sleep, do my daily stretches, keep up on the house and farm, and go play with Brandy!

Miss Rooten Tooten has arrived home..

Miss Rooten Tooten has arrived home, she is one of the smallest piglets (taking after her father I guess) but she appears very healthy, she says that being caught is a very stressful thing, so she is currently relaxing and resting in her towel bed at the end of a extra large dog crate in the house, where she will spend the next little bit, learning that we are the best, we means food, water, scratches, and treats.. all good things that will make us think of us as highs of her day..

She is a little cutie pie, she has four white socks, a white tail tip and a little tiny white blaze, she is otherwise solid black, so different in shape then Miss Piggy and those ears are like night and day, miss piggy can’t see out from her big old ears and Tooties has these little upright tiny ears.. she seems more talky then Miss piggy did when she came home but that could be a false memory, Miss Piggy talks to me the whole time she see’s me now, so it could be the same thing.. She does think that a green grape is good peace offering LOL

Spending Time with Brandy..

Well today was my first day with my wonderful Brandy Girl, I am still unsure just what mix of breeds she is, but I am pretty sure that she is at least half Clydesdale with something.. she measured in today at 15 and half hands high, and right around 1300 pds, we did a few measurements and they went as low as 1250 and as high as 1350, so lets take the middle ground and go with 1300 pds. She was wormed today, and I will be getting her on a regular health schedule, but having said that, she does appear to be quite healthy overall.

I got up this morning and got my morning chores done and everyone settled and she was waiting for me or was it the apple that I had brought with me 🙂

Today was the first day that I got to spend a good amount of time with her, and the first time she got to come over and see an meet the farm, the pasture etc.

So first let me say.. What a horse!, she takes my breath away in so many ways and when her and I were out in the pasture, just hanging, playing and exploring, I learned so much about “who” she is and I know I had so much more to learn but it was still amazing to be able to get a idea of who she is.. I like her!

Now there are things I want to work on and things that she will need to learn about what I consider safe and ok, but I honestly believe that if I am willing to put in the time and effort, this lovely lady will go from being a really nice horse to being my horse..

I’m honestly not certain that I will ever have another horse in my life or not, but as she is seven, well looked after, it is reasonable to think that I could? get another twenty years of parternship with her

I did a number of different ground work with her both on and off lead, while all the work done at Farmer T’s was done on lead, as soon as I got her into my pastures, I took her offlead and worked with her, not because she needed to be with me, but because, she wanted to be with me and work with me..

She is very good on the road and does not seem to react to passing by vehicles, she is great with the dogs she has meet and with barking dogs, and cats are the same but chickens made her start, she seems more comfortable in the open area, then in wooded trails but that was just today..

While I have a feeling that I could just jump on her and ride if I wanted to, I am working towards this in a slightly different way, I want to have a working relationship on the ground before I get in the saddle but if today was anything to go by, I think it would be fair to say that I should be taking my first ride on her within the week.

No pictures because it was all about her and me today, but I will get new photos of her coming up soon enough over the next while.. She is so perfect in size, she can be used as as riding horse for me but she can also be used as proper working draft for the farm, as my Dh says, she can’t do anything that the cow can’t and that’s true enough and I will have to work hard to not let Girls training slide, but when girl is heavy with calf or a new mom, I think it would be more fair to ask the horse to do the work then the house cow 🙂
