Raising Baby Quail without Game Feed Ration

Now I know why my girlfriends never sell me the baby quail until after they are three weeks of age.. Fragile little wee tikes they are ..

Between Snow, Cooler house temps and power outages, they have struggled with their temps, however when it comes to feeding them, I have been very! pleased with how things are working out..

P1050867I have nice straight legs, strong little bodies, great growth,

bright-eyed and active birds..  I will continue to watch growth and track things including age of first laying and so forth.

So Quail are said to need 28 percent protein for good growth and so its recommended per the books that you track down Game Bird Feed..

Well, I do not have Game Bird Feed locally, and I am not even sure where I would order in from if I wanted to..

I do have regular good quality locally grown, cleaned and ground bird feed at around 12 to 13 percent, which if was all they are feed would leave them in real issues..

So what is a girl to do?  You know I got this right 🙂

My healthy, feathering strong little birds are being raised on

  • Soaked an fermented bird feed (which increases their ability to eat it, and get all the good stuff from my great locally produced bird feed
  • Fresh Sprouts (they love red clover, alfalfa and all sweeter greens), they dislike mustard sprouts, pea greens, herb greens or kale or turnip greens, I expect that they can be trained to them with age but they attack their preferred greens without any left, the other are tried and refused.
  • Hard boiled mashed egg, and this one is the key, which the other are very important as is the what they are being raised on an fresh water, the hard boiled mashed egg is what is the extra key that allows them to thrive. They are using one of their mothers eggs per four chicks per day.. this is great as the hens lay daily and so they keep me in egg for their own chicks.

They need fresh water and the correct bedding so they do not slip on their feet, but I could not be more pleased, I had planned on adding in meal worms to their diet once a week, but watching them closely and tracking feather growth, weight growths and overall bone development,  I do not feel that its needed at this time, I will add it on week five to week 8 for when the females move over to laying if they start that young, their mother did not but only time will tell on that one.

I adjusted the feed amounts based on the chicks themselves, I did not want to waste food and they were feed four to six time a day, and I went by sounds and contentment after the feedings.

My ideal aim was that they were content until they saw me, but would call me when I was visual, they were feed and content until the next feeding, if I can any calls for food, without seeing me, I made sure to give more at the next feeding,  we figured it out quickly.

If you did not have them in the house and did not want to do four to six times a day feeding, free feeding of the main feed and twice daily feedings of the sprouts and egg would do the trick.

So far, all chicks are growing well and are in good health!

Ps, new photo on a different day that is not in a middle of a blizzard- slash freezing rain..

The Weekend Part 2

What a day, in some ways it was great, the folks who put it together did a great job, the hotel did a wonderful job and the folks I shared the day with were fab folks..

BUT!

the paid seminar was mind numbingly boring and a total waste of my money.. I rarely expect to take a course where everything is new, I am looking for small tidbits of information and I normally get that..

What I got this time..  well, I got.. to be honestly I got snarky.. I was that person, the very person, that I would hate to have in my own talks, my whole table was “that table” the one that he really hoped would not raise their hand once again.

because at no point did any of us ask a question but instead our hands where flying up to correct information or details..

While the basic information was correct, the level of it was so low in its own way, I was just ready to moan.. I was a permaculture zombie..

maxresdefault

So the big “surprise was use whey” which those that have been reading my blog, I have been talking about using milk, whey in the gardens and the fruiting trees for years now.. and I shook my head because he was like.. no one in Canada knows this.. really, because he learned if from a old farmer in Quebec, and I learned if from farmers in Alberta and when I did a little digging, the date and the studies are all over the AUS.

The second big one.. mow in stripe to keep your useful bugs alive..  honestly I paid 75 dollars to learn to cut my pruning on a angle, to use Whey in the garden and to leave higher mowing for the bugs..

The speaker is a good speaker, but he is a teacher..  and it so shows.. he is used to being in charge and those around him are hanging on his words, that when he is asked a question that he does not know the answer to.. (which was done by a number of folks) he pauses, and then changes the subject..

Really dude! Would it be so hard to just say.. I am unsure of that small part of information and I would need to do some research into that.. I say, I am not sure on that, I will dig it out and hopefully have a answer next time I am asked about it, does anyone here having anything to share on this..

I was in that bad spot of, just leave and call it because its so not worth it, and stay because you paid for it and maybe, just MAYBE there will be something useful if I just wait it out..

I spent the whole day, I listened and I doodled.. and I doodled, and I can honestly say, that for this course.. it was a true waste of my day.. and while I know he was big on the up-sale, buy my book, buy my video, pay to come for a tour and so forth..

Unless you are just starting out and you have lots of money.. Miss him.. its not worth it, there are many more reasonable priced events, and a solid number of free events that can teach you these same basics, and one good book on permaculture will cost you 20 to 30 and will provide you with more life long bang for you buck..

You know, I think this is the first time in years and 50 plus seminars that I have attended over the past 11 years that I have been this unhappy! and have to say, If someone asked me, attend or not.. the answer would be.. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!

and then I drove home on dry roads (which was nice) and came home to great homecooked meal from hubby and had a lovely evening on my farm..

Up next..

  •  Seed starting
  • Sheep milking
  • Cheese making
  • Raising Baby Quail without Game bird feed
  • Curing duck breasts..

But tomorrow, I need to get us caught up on my no buy feb updates 🙂

The Weekend :) Part one -Saturday

I will go back and answer all the comment posts, I love my comments 🙂

What a weekend..  Some of the things will get a broken down posts including a great review of Eco-Farm Days, which once again was a success and the number turn out was huge, it was packed, in some cases standing room only.

I headed out a touch later on Saturday morning for my first day of one of my continuing education programs for 2016, and the first event was quite good, I was able to pick up the full seminar for pasture grazing (mob grazing and so forth) and ….

then I got a message, call home.. and as I had left hubby with a expecting ewe, I thought it would be about lambs.. NOPE

We had a water leak in our big basement to the new area of the house and he was trying to deal with moving things, wet vac and set up ways to stop the water from working its way across the room more..

Its tricky to explain on the blog but in the most basic terms the under ground pipes from the well come though the base of the wall and run across the floor a few feet before cut though the cement wall to the cellar for the older part of the house where all the plumbing and water tanks and pumps etc are.

The water appeared to be coming in from the pipe coming in, this would be very bad indeed.. as it would mean a underground frozen broken pipe an bringing in a backhoe to dig lines..  so I headed back to the farm..

Got here and took a good look at it and realizes that it was not coming from the pipe but from the wall where the pipe came in.. Called my big brother and talking it though.. we figured out what the heck had happened..

So you remember that we had crazy cold, Everything froze and I said, my plants should be ok because there is a sheet of ice covering the ground, then the storm and the cold came. three feet of snow give or take a inch or two on either side came down on top of the ice and then we went up in temp.. and it rained for 12 hours at plus 7..

So the water running off the roof, and the water-rain melting that snow pack and itself needed to go somewhere and normally, it would have drained away from the house.. but its hard to drain when its all sitting on a sheet of ice and so the water went to the house and ran down the cement wall and found the weakness in the area that the pipe comes in, and we had a flood.

the snow pack got shoveled off, and the edger and the shovel cut in drain lines away from the house and within an hour the water leak had stopped (now in the dry heat of summer, we will need to work on repairing the area coming into the wall itself but for now.. as long as the water is draining properly (which is has for the last years) it should not be a issue.

However, in the basement, we appear to have water damaged bookcases, and other items, some things can be saved and others are damaged to the point of repair..  Per my brothers advice, we took off the bottom three feet of the wall, plastic and fill and put the fans on it to properly dry it all out, as we do NOT want damp creep up the walls..

We thought from the water that we would have more damage, but hubby found it fast, and (thank you for the wet vac) we had much less wall damage then we expected..

I figure we should be able to repair and replace for around a thousand give or take, and I am grateful that it will be all stuff that we can do ourselves, which will keep costs down.

(just to keep things interesting, we also had a new set of twin lambs born on Saturday as well, doing great.. nursing and strong)

So back I headed to the event (I spent way to much time driving) and missed some of the things I wanted to attend, but I had a great visit with friends, was gifted some great new seeds for plants, went out for supper with friends and spent the evening talking about plants and things as I was staying overnight as we had a very early start to the next day for the Sunday Event Seminar.

we have had power blips, we missed pickup on our food box, so no fresh fruit or veggie on no buy feb, our boxes went to the local food bank, because we did not get off the farm..

I will do my feb no buy round up post tonight.. but this only having hubbies laptop shared while mine in shop and the storm is really slowing me down.. keep warm, keep safe..

Whooot, Record Snow in 24 hours

Sorry about going missing, we have had cold, and more cold.. it got down to -45 and we were holding, and then came the snow.. it started out fluffy Christmas snow and it just kept coming.. and coming and coming.. over 2 feet in 24 hours and then came the drifting..

Hubby had gone into work, and they let everyone go early, the buses were stuck so he hiked 2.5 km from his work across the river to the next big bus area and finally got a bus (the average person waited an hour to get on, instead of the normal 3 to 5 min) at rush hour..

Then I got the call at the truck.. you see the wind was blowing and drifting was coming.. and he needed to shovel out the truck.. the snow had blown in and was at the height of the roof of the truck… ya, you read that right.. ROOF of the truck.. so shovel, shovel, shovel and then take it slow and steady in 4 by 4 drive on the way home.

I on the hand  shoveled paths, hauled water and hay and needed to dig out the square bale shelters.. and chores were done with snow shoes on, pulling sleds to get things around. The hounds love the snow.. Love this opps photo of the ying and yang of their colors.

P1050853

I was ever so grateful that farmer R came and dug out our main driveways and lanes.. otherwise it would have been many more hours. Sometimes you need to know when to call for help when you can.

We had a tiny power outage and wow are quail chicks fragile an then some.. they need that heat.. and extra protein..  hard boiled eggs and fresh sprouts. They have already doubled in size and they are getting tiny wing feathers..   Stay safe out there, and hopefully I will be back tomorrow..

while this photo was taken a few years ago, it was a on the moment thing, he picked me a flower to present to me..  and its one of my favorites.

P1050814

So in keeping with it being a day of sweets but it being no buy feb, I snuck off a lovely piece of dough and made little yeast doughnuts and made a mix of honey-butter as a glaze, with a hot cuppa on a cold day it was lovely.

P1050817

(it was so cold, I had to heat my flour before making my bread, buns and flat breads today.. brrrrrr)

P1050821

Ps for a extra dose of cuteness!

P1050809

While they recommend paper towel, I use a drying towel instead so it can be shook outside and washed and reused over and over again, they have their feed all over the place as they learn what is good to eat and what is not.. I appear to have five with darker brown stripping and three with yellow stripes instead, time will show me the adult coloring.

Prepping for the Deep Cold

So the news today has a warning to it.. it says that this weekend, that we are going to get down to -40 (including windchill) and let me tell ya.. that be cold!

we have been at -27 to -30 ish this week and its cold, you need your long underwear, you want your layers and your winter gear.. but when it its that -40, the air is cold enough that it hurts if you are silly enough to breath it in without wool wrapped around your face to warm it up..

Its cold enough that the moisture from your breath with create ice to form on hubbies beard and I will be wearing my hair down for just that extra layer tucked into my scarf and into my jacket..

It’s the type of cold where you understand and are so grateful that your deep cold winter jacket has either coyote or wolf fur on the hood, because no matter what the world view on fur is, we know that thick winter Canine fur will split the wind and creates a barrier that will allow your face to be degree’s warmer as long as you are not directly in facing the wind.

It’s the kind of winter day, that you will put on the sunglasses.. I know, I know. but sun, white snow and brutal cold.. you can freeze your eyes and gets a mild lovely case of snow glare..

Photokeratitis is caused by damage to the eye from ultraviolet (UV) rays. Sunlight is the main source of natural UV rays. Photokeratitis can be caused by sun reflection from sand, water, ice and snow.

But having said all that, the truth is other than worrying a touch about one of the ewes deciding to have lambs this weekend, I am looking forward to the whole farm taking a deep breath and hunkering down. Its going to be a slow weekend, they will burrow into their bedding and eat more food and give the outside world the stink eye, and the sheep and horses will come out of their barn with blinking eyes a twice a day and grudging do the walk up to the front by the yard for their fresh warm water (they can come any time for the big heated tough) but the truth is.. they will wait for that room temp warm to them water..

They will grin to themselves over the fact that it seems like there is extra in their feed..  o.. extra grain and did you see a scoop of BOSS (Black Oil Sunflower Seeds) into the mix for the extra fat and calories. And unlimited hay to stuff and chew, chew, chew..

For us in the house, I will check my kits, for just in case of power out, otherwise, frozen pipes is about the only thing I will give the eye to myself.. so far this year, we have done fine, our last fix so far as done amazingly well this year, but this will be the coldest yet.

So in the barns, out of the wind.. and before the animals heat, the temp is going to be -27 to -30ish.  the pigs will just borrow in their inside pen in a huge pile straw, and they will lay end to tail and when they rise out of their straw like big pig boats, they will steam and eat and drink and grunt  and then use their bathroom and go right back to bed..  The only sign of them, will be the steam rising from their bed..

DSC01282

The sheep will sleep in a herd, the smaller will snuggle closer to the bigger, leaning back to back for that extra warmth and they will be on their deep pack that has been growing all fall and early winter.. it is a mix of straw, poo a urine.. we have had lots of warm days, which while odd has been great for the deep pack, its composting under the newest layer of bedding, which means that all the pasture critters when laying down in their deep pack have in floor heating.

DSCN4617 (4)

And the truth is, the horses will both join them and not..  they will spend the night in the barn and they will lay down and enjoy that warmer floor themselves, but they will also stick their heads out the door and they will wait.. and if the sun shines despite the cold, they will come out and they will park themselves in front of the barn, out of the wind, standing side by side and then they will sun doze..

As long as they have access to the barn, wind breaks and all their needs meet, who am I to tell them in their thick winter coats that they can not sun themselves.. because the truth is the sun is warm right now..  When the sun pours into my living room, it can add up to an extra 5 degrees over the day in that room right now..  I will take it.. free heat, and the purrpots and hounds are found sleeping on in the sun..

Speaking of the hounds, my oldest hounds have a heated bed to sleep on, and the purrpots will join him I am sure.

So Lets talk about the things that must be prepped  for this cold.

  1. Water.. you must have water and when it gets this cold, you do not know if you can have a freeze up or a power outage.. fill up an extra 55 gallon drum where it will not freeze, fill up an extra day or two worth of five gallon buckets ahead of time..  only you know how much water you should put up. While we certainly have enough gear and cloths, some folks choose to keep less in stock so get that laundry done up, get your dishes done up..
  2. Food-Feed For those of us that are in the house, cook up a head if you do not have a good supply of pop and heat meals already prepped ahead.. If you lose power, have a plan to heat up water, and soup, stews..  a hot cuppa and a hot bowl of soup is what is needed..  (none of this, I must run to the store for milk and bread) having said that..  If you do not lose power and it’s just cold, keep a pot of hot soup simmering on the stove.. dip in whenever you feel like it.. bake some fresh bread or cookies..  it will lift everyone’s spirits to smell it in the house
  3. Feed- Keep everyone topped up and loaded down.. in the bitter cold, add a bit of extra fat to the rabbits and fowl dishes, keep the hay in front of all your four-footed critters and keep that bedding deep and high for your pigs. Keep  your farm dogs in (unless it’s a livestock breed and then just makes sure its got a good pile of straw if it wants it, the odds it will bunk down with the sheep or goats.)
  4. .Shelter, it’s a must! Wind Breaks are good, but to me shelter means wind break, dry and with bedding. the bedding is important and for me, I used straw.. lots and lots of straw
  5. Watch the old and the young, they are the ones that will have the hardest time.

For me, my oldest purrpots are in the house and use a litterbox, no need for them to be exposed at all. but my oldest Elder hound, that is hard, bathroom s outside, so my best advice, either bundle up and go out with and as soon as done, back in the house, or put on a leash – 30 foot long line and put out, watch out the window and as soon as done, bring in.  Consider a dog coat, make sure they have a heated bed to warm up in.

P1050764

For me, the young is a less them a week old nest of rabbit kits, they are in a big old pile of pulled fur in the back enclosed rabbit sleep area, lots of bedding, the key for them is to keep momma in lots of water updates so she can make milk, increase her feeding to unlimited and top with a tbp of BOSS and then because I am a worry wort, cover the whole hutch with a tarp to cut out the windchill factor.

Now I only checked the nest on day three, and I had at least 8 plus fat bellied warm kits and the night temps were -27, so if I can take the windchill out, then I have every reason to feel they will do just fine.

For the fowl, out doors are blocked keeping them inside and square straw bales have been placed in some areas to create draft blocking for at floor levels and in other cases, square bales have been placed  in the shelters so that they can be slept on.. goats love to be up higher 🙂

There you have the must do’s.. clearly if you have a wood stove, you should have wood for it, but as that is a daily thing for those that heat with wood, I did not think it needed to be on the list.. but if you only have wood as a backup heating source.. you should prep that as well.

Hope everyone has a grand weekend an just as a side note. I am luck when it comes to the garden, I have a snow pack with a ice cover on it.. it will go along way to help protect my plants, others are not so lucky..
