Got my back to the wall, got my bedding, and as many eggs as I can cover and the urge to be a momma is ruling me.. Try and take my eggs and I will peek you.. Don’t even look at me wrong or I will warn you right where you can go! LOL Don’t mess with me, I’m a warrior momma..
Anyone else got a broody hen? I will post chick photos, she has been on for a number of days now, so the odds are good she will stay firm at this point..

This brought a smile to my face. My hens don’t get broody, but I love the determination on her face!
For years I was compelled to buy chicks every spring when they came to the feed store. Then we started hatching eggs in the brooder which was fun and educational for the children. We felt like we had transitioned into a new level of self-sufficiency when the hens started hatching their own! For some reason, we usually end up with 75% (or more) roosters which is great for eating but not enough hens for replacement. So every few years we buy a dozen pullets. Do you find your hens hatch more roosters than pullets?
According to my handy farm book, while it does flex up and down depending on the year, over all, I am sitting at 55% male and 45% percent female is is not really to out of order, they say to expect 51 males to each 50 females in most things.
However my apple cider trick on the ewe’s does make a difference if I use it in the water in the fall, without it, I get the above normally with boys, but with it, I get 80% percent or higher on the female side.. its a old wives tail I know this but it does seem to work..
Thanks!! I wonder if a little apple cider would make a difference with the hens? Hmmmm, can’t hurt, might help…
Well, it can’t hurt, I know its good for keeping their guts healthy and for reducing worm loads, but don’t know if it will help at all about chick sex 🙂
