Back in my day, I would be called a packrat, today, the term folks like to say is prepper, I don’t mind either, I like to be prepared by having stuff that is available when I need it.
I would rather buy things on sale thoughout the year and I am a firm believer in two is one and one is none.. I don’t buy two extra cans of that thing on sale, I buy a extra flat or two, that way I have enough till the next sale cycle that will happen in two or three months.
If I know that we are going to want to fence that section or do this repair at some point in the future, I will watch for the sales, picking up this at one time of the year and that at a another time, so that when it gets moved up the ladder, its just a matter of getting the stuff out of storage..
So I guess ,I am cheap packrat LOL
Its works for me, and I have NO issue at all with second hand belongings, I love farm sales, second hand shops, trading and the church basement. I see no reason to pay full price for many things when they can be gotten for meer pennies on the dollar, just because someone else used them once.
So last night we had a wild storm and the winds blew from a rarely seen direction, and it found a weakness in my old house cellar and froze up our cold water pipes, thankfully not the hot water pipes, and nothing broke, just no cold water, but if not found quickly, if not tended to quickly and fixed, the issue could have easily gotten worse.
So from a quick 1:30am pee break, it turned into a up till 5am burn the midnight oil, thankfully each thing that was need for the job to repair the issue was on the farm, and even better most of it was either in the house, or in tool box’s that could be grabbed quickly.
By the time we went to bed, it was just a matter of let time and heat do their jobs and voila when we woke up, we had running water (cold) in both the bathroom and kitchen again.
There is a pride in being able to do things yourself, there is a pride in being able to have the required stores on hand.. It might have been a pain in the rear but at least we were able to fix it ourselves, we had the required tools, material and knowledge to do so!
Hope you made it though the storm with no ill effects if you were in its path.. Now to figure out if we really can shovel out the drive so hubby can go to work or if we need to call in help and get the tractor down (if and when they can find the time for us) to get it cleared, wish we had thought to move the car to the end of the driveway last night, but we didn’t.

Girl Guides’ motto “Be prepared.”
My oldest friend always said “Be prepared for the worst, but hope for the best.” and, if that’s being a PackRat, then so be it!! Honestly though, as far as I’m concerned, this trend toward purging our belongings is just so the Consumer Society needs to keep buying more, instead of fixing what they already own… Well, you used to be able to fix things – before everything being produced was only garbage to start out with, that is…
All hail the Makers and the Fixers; )
Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without. We have built most of our farm from used and free stuff. It is a great way to be! And yes, we have to store it till there is a use for it, but it awesome when you suddenly need it and there it is waiting for you.
thanks….next time someone calls me a hoarder, I am going to correct them & say I am a packrat.
Glad you got everything sorted without the pipes breaking.
