Working on a Rabbit Hide..Part one..

Now I know that you can buy or even make homemade chemical tanning solutions and with time and practise you will get very good results indeed..

My hide is not going to come out looking like that, I am curing with salt/alum and will be doing a light smoking with summac for the tannins.. none the less it will work very well for what I have in mind..

So in the photos, you have a chilled in a snow bank rabbit hide, from start to mostly cleaned up and salted down and chilling waiting for the next step.. From start to finish in the photo, it took me a good three hours of careful detailed work on scraping down the hide, and it could still use some more work yet.

So what are you using for a scraper; anything special?

  2. You keep it iced in the snow in between working on it? How do you keep it from being snatched away by four-legged beasties? Or did you get it all done in one day?

    • Questions are good,

No, when skinning out the rabbit, I like to cool the hides as fast as possable, so as soon as they come off and I have openned up the legs to be able to lay the whole raw pelt flat, I like to lay it skin side down in a clean snow bank to chill.

Critters, dogs, cats and wild critters would all love to get their jaws on the hides so they must be protected (where I am going to be able to store a hide the size of Marty is still a very good question, not to meantion that I am going need to build a whole new stretching board for him.

Done in one day.. you are funny! hides don’t get done in one day, you can do the skinning in one day, and you can get the scraping/fletching done in a day for a smaller or even a large hide to a point, then it will take at least two weeks in the cures, then scraped again, then worked and worked some more, then smoked and worked again and again for making it softer and then you need to work your oils in and stretch and work it some more.. thankfull for small hide, it will only take a few minutes per day of rolling it back and forth over the back of the chairs, but I am still working on how to do certain parts with the cow hide.. thinking I might have to ask little Miss A to come over and walk all over it a few times or see if I can get it put on their tampaone at a certain point and let the kids bounce to their hearts content.
