Thusday Health Update..

Wow, its a healthy update Thursday and I missed last week, so I need to do a two week update, still doing my best to remove all wheat from the diet but I have slipped a bit in the past two weeks, not within my own cooking or in my house but while I have been out and about..

Having said that, I was a bit leary of getting on that scale to be honest, I mean I knew that my cloths were loose and that I have been able to get into a size smaller then normal but still, I felt a bit bloated from my Opp’s, none the less I was down almost another 6 pds, as I said to hubby, sheez, if we had eaten correctly, I bet I would have been down ten.. O well..

Well, I will tell you this, my horse gym is so giving me a workout, between working with Brandy, Working on the farm and going horseback riding, I have places on my body that hurt that I was not even really aware that it could LOL

Stretching is a very good thing, I have been taking to making sure I stretch a number of times a day, also I find if I sit to long or even lay to long, I get stiff and need to stretch and move, been using ice rub and the massage machine, as well as good feet soaks.

Still its paying off, This spring, I would haul two five gallon buckets, do a different chore, then haul two more, then take a break, do something in the house, and haul the four more thoughtout the day to the barn..  The other day, I was in a good mood, and was morning fresh, and I hauled six five gallon buckets in a row for the barn critters, then hauled two more for the yard critters and then hauled in two for the house use! No breaks, No rests, no splitting it up during the day! I was feeling the burn by the time I got done, but I was so proud of myself.

Got a new summer dress on the 5 buck rack at Walmart this week, and its three sizes small then the ones I was buying two years ago! Its so pretty too!

So have you been eating well? Have you been feeling the burn? and if so, what have you been doing? Have you been thrilled to be able to get a new size in your summer cloths sale shopping!

It sounds like you’re doing very well. Keep up the good work!

I just read on Dr. Davis’s Wheat Belly blog about the long-lasting effects of eating foods with tapioca starch (http://www.wheatbellyblog.com/2012/08/heart-poison/). I have not strayed from the Paleo/Primal path until earlier this week after being so stupid as to have eaten two small slices of “healthy” gluten-free pizza made using tapioca starch found in the frozen food section of my grocery store. It came highly recommended as being the nice thin crust that I used to love. It was ok tasting but not good enough to want more. Now I learn from Dr. Davis that the tapioca starch falls into the same category as cornstarch, rice starch and potato starch (which I would never touch) as “junk carbohydrates”. Never again!

I had my first labwork yesterday after starting with no wheat 6/10 and no grains etc. 6/17. As expected, as I was playing with being on and off my insulin that the A1C was going to be higher than it was in early June. That’s ok. I have to know what is working and what is not. My overall cholesterol since 2/22 was down 10 points and triglycerides were down 67 points. Still got a struggle on my hands with the HDL (too low) and LDL (a little too high). However, the cholesterol does not bother me as, overall, it is at 210 and nothing to get alarmed about.

The really good news was that, in spite of taking the insulin off and on, I had lost 16 pounds since my last office visit in June. It’s the first weight loss I have had since starting diabetes medications more than 6 or 7 years ago; my weight had inched up with nearly every quarterly MD appointment.

Since I simply cannot help myself from trying to be helpful, I have to share a “few” things that hopefully will be of help to others:

I cannot stress more strongly that this is not rocket science to get things right. We are all individuals and no two of us will have the same results from doing the same or similar things. The best advice I want to share is to keep on reading, reading, reading.

I just discovered Dr. Ron Rosedale and the Rosedale Plan (http://drrosedale.com/). There are some excellent articles on his website and I ordered his Rosedale diet book from Amazon. He makes excellent sense when it comes to dealing with insulin and how great a role it plays in our health. I highly recommend visiting his site.

I recently ordered two books by Gary Taubes: “Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It” and “Good Calories, Bad Calories: Fats, Carbs, and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health”. The former is more for the layman to read and the latter has all of the technical info to back it up. His website and bio is here: http://garytaubes.com/.

Although it is something I actually was aware of years ago, one of the biggest issues is inflammation. This website has a lot of good info: http://coolinginflammation.blogspot.com/ Antioxidants and identifying and avoiding inflammatory foods is key.

For meat foodies I suggest the book “Falling Off the Bone” by Jean Anderson. Just the pictures are inspiring. Go meat!

Kelly the Kitchen Kop has info on a free online “Go Grain Free” class: http://kellythekitchenkop.com/2012/09/who-should-go-grain-free-how-to-save-now-on-the-grain-free-online-class.html

    • Wow Brenda,

Congrata!! Way to go Girl, that’s awesome!!!!! I am so proud of you and I just love reading your updates, love your tips and as always your reply posts are chocked full of thing I need to find time to look into and research, I got that sweet potato cookbook and really like it! Now, I will no doubt end up falling in love with falling off the bone 🙂

Come back and give me a idea of what you think about that rosedale diet and book..

Dr. Rosedale’s book came this afternoon and I Hoovered through it as I had already read all the articles on his website and am familiar with his research-based info on insulin and leptin. He identifies diabetes and obesity as hormone-related “communication” problems and not “sugar” problems or fat consumption problems, etc.

I would highly recommend the book simply because he goes into enough detail to explain why you would want to take certain supplements to restart the ability of insulin and lectin to get into the cells. That info is missing on his website.

He is also honest in saying that, if like me, someone is on insulin and the pancreas is no longer capable of producing insulin, he/she would most likely not be able to completely quit taking it but could end up taking a lot less.

There are also a goodly number of recipes. However, he does include tofu, soybeans, and something called Manna from Heaven bread that is only available from a bakery in Los Angeles. At $6 a loaf, the fermented sprouted grain bread is not only very expensive (add shipping!) but not gluten free and obviously not grain free, which eliminates it in my book. The bakery does, however, also bake and ship an almond bread at nearly $7 a loaf (and shipping!) and not worth it in my mind as I’m on the east coast.

Hey hey hey…that is SO great! Three sizes smaller and more fit/able to do multiple or sustained bucket carrying of 80#’s nice!! (1 gallon = 8#) 🙂 All good things.

  3. Well, I’m definitely not DOWN a clothing size. 😛 I’m actually trying to gain a little more.

However, I’m so happy to hear that your weight loss is going well.
