There was some very cute in some cases recipes for Fruits, and in other, just a touch odd to me. Clearly there was regular picking and eating of fruit in season, there was also canning of fruit, jams and Jellies, and fruit based syrups.
Here is one of the earliest versions of this fruit-Marshmallow Salad.
It is listed as Raisin Fruit Salad
3 bananas, 3 oranges, 10 Marchmallows, half a cup of raisons, quarter cup of walnuts mix with a mayonnaise or cream dressing..
This recipes seems so very odd to me.. Banana and oranges.. these are NOT in anyway local fruits to either Canada or England.. and Marchmallows.. really.. as I said.. odd
Hmmm, lets switch this over to a more reasonable Canadian Recipes..
Honeyed Apples with Raisins
4 Large Apples, 2 tbsp. Tapioca, and pinch of salt, half a cup of raisins, 2 cups of water, with 4 tbsp. of honey.
Peel and core the apples, fill the centers with a mix of the raisins and honey, while these are baking, cook the remaining items in a double boiler until the tapioca is clear.. Pour this over the baked apples, and serve with a touch of rich milk or cream if you have it..
