    Cabbage family?
Looks like the rabbits (or somebody else) like it…

    • Someone else said maybe red plantain? and I think she might be right, it would be the chickens that had a nibble I guess.. its interseting and I only in the one spot, but there is a few of them that are popping up, this is so far the biggest of them, if they are useful, I will move them because there are in a area that is about to be going to the piggy plow.. so any plants in there that I want saved, will need to be moved and soon.

It looks more like the start of a plant called willow weed(Epilobium parviflorum) or maybe bugle(Ajuga reptans) The veining structure does not look quite right to be a plantain. See this sight for a good image of purple plantain http://www.sunlandwatergardens.com/2011/04/purple-plantain/. If taxed or soil is deficient I’ve often seen the willow weed come up quite red to begin with but the foliage looks a bit more leathery and rounded so thats why I lean towards the bugle. I suspect once you have seen the full life cycle of this it will easier to ID.

    • Thanks for the reply, this is really good soil, well feed, lots of compost, full sun and if the roots go down at least two feet, it will hit water on any given year, I have a higher area of the garden for those that like it a bit dryer but this is down in the area that if you put heavy water loving plants, they can pretty much self water all summer long along with heavy top mulch.

Hey there, did you figure it out yet? Enough new leaves now to be able to tell for sure?
