I just found my seeds today! They were lost in my black hole of a basement, lol! I always feel so behind in my garden planning every year 😦

Have you ever grown fingerling potatoes? If so, who did you buy from? I found Eagle Creek Seeds in Alberta, but not sure if they’re organic, GMO-free. Will try to find out. I have read that fingerling potatoes do not raise blood sugar levels as much as regular spuds!

    • Yes, I have grown them, I think I did it three years back, and i honeslty don’t remember where I ordered them from, i will need to dig to find my farm book from that year to see if I marked it down, I remember I paid more for them, and the yield was just sad.. I much perfer to just harvest baby sizes on the edges from the regular potato plants, and get a much better yeild for eating and storage.

Re: fingerlings…that’s disappointing to hear that your yield was poor. I might experiment by planting a small amount to see how they’ll do in our soil. I’ll do more research about finding a source. Thanks for your response 🙂

  3. LOL Yes, I do want to know the variety! I have some of the same as you, so that makes me feel good. I notice you grow a hybrid corn. L was just telling me today that she worries I might not be able to grow out seed corn, not simply because I might be a lousy gardener, because it takes far, far longer than growing for eating, and so she strongly recommends that I grow only hybrid corn. Do you have any idea how long it takes to grow out seed corn? Should I just stick to hybrid corn?

    • In regards to the corn, you have alot more freedom then me, you just need to worry about your growing dates, as I said before, I pick my corn based on getting the right grow out time to match it going to pollinate NOT at the time that the local GMO Cow corn is going at the same time.. this limits me a fair amount, plus we just really like how this corn cans up in the pressure canner. I like the higher sugar content for when making creamed corn.

      • As for it being hybred, that really does not bother me much, I keep back alot of my own hybred seed on things and as long as I am happy with the results, I am good to go.. its true that the next gens won’t breed as true but if you liked both parents and you liked the hybred, then the odds are very good you will like all the results in general and if you pick the plants second gens that do well in your area and then pick again.. it’s like my FG mixed hertiage tomato’s, at this point, I could not tell you what “breed” or hybrid they are, but they are big, they are tasty, they can be eaten fresh, they have a good acid level for all my canning needs and they grow like wild hotcakes in my neck of the woods..

      • I think I can safely assume that no one is going to be growing corn within a mile of us. 😀 Okay, maybe not within ten miles of us. I have 100 seed of Simonet heirloom corn and L said she was going to buy me about 500 of “surprise me” hybrid corn. By how much time should I separate them?

I grow some of the same varieties you do. This is my first year growing watermelon, so I have high hopes for Sugar Baby. I like to grow a few different kinds of lettuce as well. Variety makes the salad interesting! Tomatoes I’m growing this year, ‘Bison’, ‘Manitoba’, ‘Carbon’ ‘Amana Orange’, ‘Early Annie’, ‘Martino’s Roma’, ‘Blush’ and ‘Goose Creek’. I’m also growing Red Stalk celery this year, among tons of other things. Have you ever grown it?
