Spending Time with Brandy..

Well today was my first day with my wonderful Brandy Girl, I am still unsure just what mix of breeds she is, but I am pretty sure that she is at least half Clydesdale with something.. she measured in today at 15 and half hands high, and right around 1300 pds, we did a few measurements and they went as low as 1250 and as high as 1350, so lets take the middle ground and go with 1300 pds. She was wormed today, and I will be getting her on a regular health schedule, but having said that, she does appear to be quite healthy overall.

I got up this morning and got my morning chores done and everyone settled and she was waiting for me or was it the apple that I had brought with me 🙂

Today was the first day that I got to spend a good amount of time with her, and the first time she got to come over and see an meet the farm, the pasture etc.

So first let me say.. What a horse!, she takes my breath away in so many ways and when her and I were out in the pasture, just hanging, playing and exploring, I learned so much about “who” she is and I know I had so much more to learn but it was still amazing to be able to get a idea of who she is.. I like her!

Now there are things I want to work on and things that she will need to learn about what I consider safe and ok, but I honestly believe that if I am willing to put in the time and effort, this lovely lady will go from being a really nice horse to being my horse..

I’m honestly not certain that I will ever have another horse in my life or not, but as she is seven, well looked after, it is reasonable to think that I could? get another twenty years of parternship with her

I did a number of different ground work with her both on and off lead, while all the work done at Farmer T’s was done on lead, as soon as I got her into my pastures, I took her offlead and worked with her, not because she needed to be with me, but because, she wanted to be with me and work with me..

She is very good on the road and does not seem to react to passing by vehicles, she is great with the dogs she has meet and with barking dogs, and cats are the same but chickens made her start, she seems more comfortable in the open area, then in wooded trails but that was just today..

While I have a feeling that I could just jump on her and ride if I wanted to, I am working towards this in a slightly different way, I want to have a working relationship on the ground before I get in the saddle but if today was anything to go by, I think it would be fair to say that I should be taking my first ride on her within the week.

No pictures because it was all about her and me today, but I will get new photos of her coming up soon enough over the next while.. She is so perfect in size, she can be used as as riding horse for me but she can also be used as proper working draft for the farm, as my Dh says, she can’t do anything that the cow can’t and that’s true enough and I will have to work hard to not let Girls training slide, but when girl is heavy with calf or a new mom, I think it would be more fair to ask the horse to do the work then the house cow 🙂

A member of the local trail riding club had a gelding who was 27 when she had to put him down. She also has another horse that’s 47 years old; so who knows how long this new relationship might last? : )
