You know that they how they say before there were car salesman there was horse salesman..

A horse update:

Well, she is beautiful and she is in reasonable good shape, nothing that I could not fix up quickly with some good hay (her pasture is as sad as most locally), some care and she needs a good worming, she is the make and model I want, the age is right, the temperment is right, but the owner is a wee bit of a “fibber” if you ask me..  She may have been well broke at one time but its been awhile..

Now, I honestly don’t know how much time or ground work would need to be put into her but I expect not that much, she comes to be caught, she is beautiful on the halter/lead, she tacks up with no issues, she is good with different folks getting on and off.. but the riding part.. not so sure of herself, as in she needs work there in a big way..

She went from being the ideal horse (per what i was told) to a project horse that has alot of basic’s solid and needs both ground work and saddle work.. and trust me that means she no longer fits that very long list I have for the perfect horse, throw in that I really wanted a gelding so that I didn’t have to deal with heats or any possable wee ones, as Farmer T has a stud in her herd across the way.. and I am doing the iffy thing at the moment.

I think If I am being honest that if she was what I had been told, shown etc, I would have most likely brought her home and worked with her, now I really don’t know.. she might end up at Farmer T’s anyway, in which case, I might “borrow her” for a while and do some ground work daily with her for a bit and see what she is like and go from there..

I will keep you posted and share photo’s one way or the other..

I don’t know much about horses, but from what I understand there are a lot of rescue operations for them. Kinda for cats and dogs. Basically, if you really want a horse, getting one won’t be a problem. The real question is: do you have time for one? Maybe treating yourself to a few horseback riding afternoons would be enough?

    • Been doing the few rides and all it did was make me more horse crazy and really want one of my own, so going riding has just made the “want” worse not better.. After going riding the urge to get out come on hard and strong for days afterwards.

As for rescue, that is true but I am not keen on it, I have rescue cats and dogs that is true, but when it comes to a animal as big as a horse, I would really! perfer to not be starting with a problem horse, please don’t get me wrong, I am more then willing to put in the ground work and the training and bonding time that goes with any new horse as you learn the ropes and each other, that’s normal and expected..

But no, I don’t have time to take on a “hard luck’ or true project horse, ,training and bonding is one thing, a rescue horse is another.

Ah well, the informed customer is a cheat’s undoing; if she’s truly worth it, then you’ve just acquired a pile of bargaining chips with which to dicker, non?
As to the gelding bit, well “she’s” not a “he”, so that’s a moot point. It sounds like she has the desire, just not the knowledge to give what you’re asking; so better the need to be taught than “unlearn” bad habits or overcome abuse?
With the way you approach conditioning your animals, these would all be things that “come out in the wash” anyway.
Good luck with your decision (but when was the last time you did something strictly for the joy of it? ; )

    • Very true deb, the he and or she thing is a bit of a moot point, it was always a flex on that, if the right horse came, I don’t disike a mare, but there are perks to a gelding is all, one of the them being that they tend to be a bit bigger/stronger, but in this case, the mare is very much able to care me, so no worries there. Your point about training vs undoing is very! valid and noted.

I here you about the condition of the critters, as it turns out the horses owner has family in my neck of the woods and when told I was the one looking (by the middle person) said, I know her animals are all well looked after, I have seen them in the fields, them out watering, working with and grooming etc

Reminds me of the scene in Fiddle on the Roof when Tevye is talking about tradition and he said “Of course, there was the time when he sold him a horse and told him it was only six years old, when it was really 12.”

    • Well, I can talk to the breeder of the mare, I would be her third owner, she was sold to the current one at a yearling and has been with him for six, so the paperwork tracks that she is seven and while she has had one run in with a fence about three years ago, no lasting damage appears to be done but I will do the follow up with the regular vet, feet were done four weeks ago and I also put a call into the farrier to do followup there as well.

Good morning, the concensus here is work with her for the summer and if you would still prefer a gelding, either dad or Joey will buy her off you. If possible make a deal on the tack in with her price, do a bit of horse trading. Let me done. Will go as hi as 1500.oo mom

    • Hey Mom, I will see what I can do, and If is ends up local, I will indeed work with her and keep you guys posted, I honestly think its possable that she could come along really well with someone that will put the time into her, and finding an hour a day on the farm is not a issue for me. I will look into the getting her tailored gear with her but like I said on the phone it will depend on the saddle, I know what kind of western gear I want to ride with and I will not buy if its not the kind I want, regardless if that is what she is used to.. Clearly she has not been ridden enough that it would really matter much! Plus I think he has regular saddle from the sounds of it and I really think it might work better if she had a draft saddle instead.. Like I said will keep you posted!
