Wheat Belly -Night reading..

So Deb had recommended that I read Wheat Belly, and I did so, I am very fast reader but for a good book, I will also read it over and over again, something amuses DH to know end, like one of my favorite books Rapter Red, I read it about two or four times a year for the past 15 plus years..

Anyway, I have to say that I just can’t be suprised to find out that they have breed the heck out of our current wheat to the point that our bodies can’t keep up with the changes in it..

I have to admit to being a little sad at reading it but not that surprised.. I think it would be very interesting to give it a try for a month and see what happens, in regards to removing wheat from my diet..

The catch or the problem I have is two fold..veggies and some of the other grains.

a) I would not be willing to remove things I can grow on the farm, potato’s, squash, corn etc from my diet, I would be willing to let go of wheat (Which I know bothers me) but I am not sure I would give up all barley ( which does not bother me and I use it alot in soups/stews). I normally don’t have any issues with oats either..

I would want to see if I could keep limited amount of rice in, I don’t have a problem with his recommended “lower” amounts as that is about perfect for soups/stews etc

I think, I am going to give this a try and see what happens, if I get postive effects, I will work harder at it, will let you know how it all goes..

Oh good! I’m glad you seem to have some of the same reservations about this as I do (but wanted you to read it first; )
So, once you totally eliminate all of this “wheat” from your diet, I wonder about using original forms – reintroducing non gmo versions – if this would make any difference?

    • My mom has a farm half way between her place and dad’s farm that is growing their own grains and then slow stone grinding them, this morning, I made Stone Ground Barley pancakes, while they didn’t rise as much and they didn’t taste the same, they were excellent, I really liked them, and I know that Dh would be much more willing to try to work with me on the no wheat thing, if I can still give him some kinds of other grain products that don’t bother me, I will contact the farmer and see if they are using non-GMO seeds but really how the heck can you know.. plus there would be shipping costs sending it from alberta back home and it would kill my 100 mile, but I think until I could find a source in ontario, I would be willing to do so, just so that once or twice a month, we could have our sunday breakfast of pancake and dippy egg.. If I can get ahold of the farmer and get some answers, I will post about it.. Otherwise, I am told there is a new beef store on the way out of town and I think I will try and sneak off and get a tongue or some different odd bits, I am really! missing the full body flavour of the cuts I do at home, and I have a few wild idea’s to share for reicpes..

Not to be a killjoy, but… good luck finding non GMO wheat. Even if it is grown organically, drift is a huge problem and not just for us but for the farmers unfortunate enough to end up contaminated….since that allow Monsatan to actually sue them for infringement. Gahhh. I was just reading about leaky gut too and I really believe that all the GMO/BT corn is the culprit there…

Anyhow, I hope you do try the wheat free diet. It has made a big difference for me. I’ve gone without wheat for a few months now and feel much better, way less bloating and joint discomfort. Good luck.

I am increasingly convinced that my little girl’s persistent health problems are directly linked to wheat, but besides the family resistance to phasing out wheat, I am finding it extremely challenging to eliminate it on our severe budget! Summertime won’t be too bad once the garden is doing its thing, but I am dreading the winter, and school lunches…looks like another week of research and development, or so, lol!

    • That’s part of the reason why I wrote, I Would not be willing to remove things I can control the buying of the kind of seeds, the growing of the food and the processing process itself, no one is going to tell me that land that is not sprayed, that something that is been kept back from my own garden, over wintered, planted out and grow and picked by me, is not 150% more healthy then trusting the “system” to provide me with things I can’t grow.. How is the garden and we need to start trying to connect to make a visiting date, so that I can work on getting someone to come look after ma so that I can come spend some time on the farm with you 🙂

I think I’d add another zero to that number my friend… the corporate farming is really that bad. 1500% for home grown 😉

Next Saturday is weigh-in day and we’ll be bringing home the lambs. Other than that, depends. What days were you considering? Hmmm. I thot I had your email Addy. I’ll try Facebook.

Hey Farmgal – I’m growing my own wheat, oats and barley this year, all heirlooms. Remind me in the fall and I will send you enough to get you started next year if you want. 🙂
