Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween Gang, Trick and Treat for all of you that have little ones, hope you have a great and safe night.

I would like to tell you that its a exciting night for us but alas since moving to the farm it is not, the first year here, I turned on all the lights, put out the pumpkin and light the step up and had candy ready.. nobody came, not even the Farmer T who has three little ones.. The next year, I went big to draw them in but got less candy and still nothing.. now, I don’t even bother to flip the light.. I know no one is coming..

Its the very opposite of when we were up in Iqaluit, the first year we were there I got enough for 200 children, and I was out in 20 min flat, after that I would buy enough for 400 which was my max out amount, I had a trip down to the south and I had gone to either walmart or the dollar store and I got these big bags of toys, spiders rings and little hair clips that kind of thing, 50 to a bag, wow were they a hit with the kids, everyone was so excited, it would get so busy on our little street that you just closed the second door and left the front door open for the first while, as they would just come in waves.

I remember loving halloween as a child, one of my favorite things was that mom would make popcock colored balls back when it was considered safe to make homemade candy to give out and away, none of this going to the store and buying the candy in little tiny packages. What was your favorite treat that your mom or grandma used to make at Halloween.

Now for us, we like to look at it more at a part of the cycle of the season’s and with that in mind, we have a special feast in honor of our beloved that have passed on.

So is today all about dressing up and trick or treating?  Or do you use today to remember those loved ones that have passed?

When I was small, we lived just outside a tiny village of maybe 100 residents and there were always houses you could depend on for seasonal fruit, popcorn balls, coins…and once in a while full-sized candy bars. Now we take the kids to the neighboring village where they have a huge Trunk-Or-Treat and a couple nice cul-de-sacs to walk.

I don’t want to sound prudish or uptight, but the past year or two, I’ve sort of had issues with Halloween. I’ve been running it through my ‘filter’ and I’m not sure I see any redeeming quality to this holiday. Of course, my husband loves it so I haven’t really said much but I don’t think this holiday is for me.

One cool thing though: 10-31 is the day Martin Luther nailed his theses to the door, so my church sort of has roots in Halloween 🙂 God has such a great sense of humor!

    • Hi Andrea,

Well, I hope that for some folks at least that A Soul’s night means more then dressing up and getting candy (but I think for little one’s that is were the fun is at” However without getting into it to much on the blog, I do believe that everyone has a soul and that each living thing has a divine spark in them, and this is one of the times of the year that, that is honoured just a little bit more outloud,

Having lost my little baby girl (five days old) and my son (one day old), and truly feeling that I knew when their souls slipped back to the other side, it has a lot of meaning for me..

As a farmer, I am aware of the awe that comes when new life comes and the part of me that HAS to give thanks and a blessing when the time comes that I take that life as part of the cycle on a farm, its done with respect.. Ok, going to stop there..

    Happy Hallowe’en to you too!
We’re in the same boat as you.  The local kids all go into town where they can get to more houses in less time.  But, what they don’t know and we always have, is that you get ‘way better stuff (like full-sized chocolate bars, cans of pop and special custom goody bags) all on our little road,
The neighbours always knew we’d be coming; loving to visit and admire what new costume we’d dug out of our imaginations.
Now we only buy the goodies we like or bake something special to us.  Like you, the celebration is really only for our family and has become a more traditional reason to decorate and carve the pumpkins for All Hallows Eve.

We live on the second floor on a main street so we don’t get any kids either- they keep to the side streets, I put my pumpkin on the back deck where anyone walking down the alley can see it if they look up but that’s about it. I do enjoy walking around the nearby residential streets to see the kids. Tomorrow night we have our pumpkin parade in Sorauren park!
