Wonderful! I love garter snakes. They are so useful, and cute, to boot! Here, we are very encouraged to see many more frogs this year than we have seen for a long time.

AWESOME FG! Love how soft and smooth they feel. Just a little one though, eh? So, how long was she?

That looks very much like Sticky the snake, who we often see on one of our dog walks pretending to be, well, a stick 🙂

Nice photo of this neat little garden snake. I love garden snakes! I use to catch them when I was a kid. Where I live, if you see a glow worm it means there is virtually no pollution….. and that is a good thing. 🙂

I know they are good for the garden ecosystem but let me go on record as saying I’m not looking forward to the day I find one of these “good” guys in our little garden. I guess it just takes some getting used to.

    • fair enough ed, but please don’t be like a friend of mine that told me found one and then killed it with a shovel, you don’t have to catch it and take photos and coo to it, like I do, just let it move along and it will do so with all haste 🙂

the only time I have screamed like a little girl over a snake was in my early teens, I was floating in a river, in a shallow area that you could just hang out in, and a snake swam up to my face in the water, and I was lost it.. one of the family dogs, tried to defend me, poor snake.. first I picked it up and threw it, and then the dog jumped up and down on it at least once, while barking and biting at it.. before it went off the rocks and back into the water on the other side.. still feel kinda bad, but dang, when you are sunbathing in a floating river, you do not expect a snake to swim into your face! LOL

No I guess not. I’ve only ever killed the poisonous kind, copperheads around here. I’ve found others and let them live. But we’ve not found any in the garden yet. They will be welcome, with tongue in cheek. Till then the rubber ones my wife has set will have to do.

One of the things that encouraged me to buy this neglected property was the sheer number of snakes. I run into a few of them everyday. I found one hanging out in a tree one day 5 feet off the ground!

I used to catch them as a kid (made a lego movie with one as the monster!), then their numbers declined and I hardly ever saw them for years. By the time I saw them again I got slow and old apparently because I got bit trying to catch it. Now I don’t catch them anymore. Sort of like I’ve gotten afraid to play with daddy long legs and had a hard time catching crawdads this weekend (i think ours are extra flexible)

    snakes are awesome.

LOL! This sounds like me too, EricaMay! And you set me thinking about that Garter “bite” I got – oh, SO many years ago – but mine was more like a “rasp” than a bite really…
My mistake, was in not trying to get up on her from behind, like I would’ve normally done; but this was in the woods, down back at the farm, and those old cedar trees weren’t about to give me clear passage AND allow me to keep an eye on that snake at the same time, so I tried to grab her face-on):
So, long story short, she got away unmolested and I acquired a healthy dose of respect(fear) for harmless (NOT defenseless; ) Garter Snakes…
      P.S. Crawdads bite too; )

  7. Ohh, how cute. Over here we have no snakes. No, not even the humble Grass snake that’s so common in the UK. We do however have a LOT of frogs and although I love them for the garden I squeal when I see one !! E

  8. I have a few of these guys too!
Really helps to keep the field mouse population down!
