Cracked the 1000 Jar mark today in this years canning!

Yahoo!!! With today’s canning, and the last batch in the canner as I write, I have put up 1025 jars so far this year, my goal is to get to at least 1200 plus and its clearly within reach at this point..

Then the questions becomes that eating out of the pantry over the winter, along with the things that will continue to come in from the farm, like milk, eats and fresh meat, will it be enough with my freezers and dried goods to take me though the winter this year not till spring but until my garden is starting to produce again!

Only time will tell, what does my readers think, is it enough or do I need to put up more.. household of two adults plus house critters (got a few old ones that mainly eat human style dinners), so think Two adults plus one middle aged child in the amount required.

  1. I hope it’s enough because I doubt we have nearly that amount and there are two adults and two kids here. Plus, we have no freezer except the one over the fridge.

    • Hi C.D.

Well, I certainly think its enough to tell the truth but we will see what we run out of, plus ideally we are not just aiming for one year really but on some things ideally you are hoping to put up two years worth, for the “just in case” you have a bad garden year, but I can tell you this, I am tired of buying jars this year, I have gotten some at farm sales and second hand stores but as most of them are all narrow mouthed, had to pay full price on the wide mouth jars. Ah, good thing they last for years and years.

Good grief. I was feeling all puffed-up about canning 300 jars…and I have a full house.

Can I come stay with you?

    • Hi Andrea, well I didn’t mean to make you feel bad in any way, I think its awesome that you have canned 300 jars this year! its alot of work and it will be great for your family to eat such wholesome food come winter.

LOL, I don’t mind invited vistors, but I am pretty far away 🙂

    • Every time I do something that exhausts me and makes me think I’m TEH Food Preserver and Prepper ™, Farmgal gives me tips on how to do it better, faster, cheaper or more efficiently. 😀 She is truly amazing. I’d give anything to spend a week on her farm.

      • Hi Doomer, Thanks for the kind words, there is always more to learn, more to figure out how to do that better, I am making Chili sauce today, as well as grape juice, and canning beans and corn, it may be unkind but I am starting to look forward to that first hard frost that will be coming within the month, so that I can slow down on the canning/kitchen and get some more time to prep the rest of the farm for winter..
