Its the time of year for Giant Puffballs…

My first winter, I was so surprised to see these Giant Puffballs appear in our back pasture in Late Oct, Early Nov, now I know that when the hard frosts start, its time to keep a close eye out for these babies to start growing, and growing and growing.. That is my 5.11 200 hundred pd hubby holding those babies, just to give us a idea of just how huge they are..

They are good sliced and fried, but I dry most of mine and then crush them into a powder that I use to as thicken in dishes that a nice mushroom flavor is good in.. so soups and stews mainly.

  2. I’ve never heard of them. Cool!

    • They are one of the first starter wild mushrooms that most folks start out looking for, they are a soft in texture cooked mushroom, they don’t go firm like the little white buttom mushrooms do but they are very good and thankfully they don’t really have any worrisome look-a-likes.. As long as they are fresh they are good, but like all new mushrooms or wild foods, start with a tiny but and then wait 24 hours to make sure you have no reactions.
